Predicting the next 4 WWE Intercontinental Champions
The Intercontinental Championship is WWE's second-oldest title, having been created in 1979. It has been held by Hall of Famers from Pat Patterson and Pedro Morales to Edge and Shawn Michaels. Due to its reputation as the "workhorse title," it has helped many a superstar to establish themselves as pillars of the product and often propelled them to subsequent world champion status.
Bron Breakker is the current titleholder in his second reign, and the Unpredictable Badass delivered the latest stellar shift in his current reign at Survivor Series 2024. As dominant a champion as the Big Bad Booty Nephew has been, he can't hold the gold forever. At some point, someone is bound to dethrone him, and the lineage will roll on and on.
Given the current landscape, let's attempt to predict the next four WWE Intercontinental Champions after Bron Breakker.
#4: Sheamus needs to finish his story by dethroning Bron Breakker as WWE Intercontinental Champion
Sheamus was one of the biggest beneficiaries of Triple H's takeover of WWE's creative duties, experiencing a career resurgence. His battles with Gunther at Clash At The Castle 2022 and WrestleMania 39, the latter of which also involved Drew McIntyre, were integral to building The Celtic Warrior's current reputation as a "banger" machine.
At the center of the 46-year-old's iconic tussles with The Ring General, of course, was the one title the former has never won, The Intercontinental Championship. The four-time world champion is now embroiled in a three-way tussle with current champ Bron Breakker and Ludwig Kaiser. While he is yet to succeed, The Great White needs to finish his story and finally capture the elusive prize.
A vocal majority of fans have been calling for him to dethrone Breakker at WrestleMania XLI, and that potential decision is hard to argue with.
#3: A growing number of fans are calling for Dominik Mysterio to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship
Dominik Mysterio is one of WWE's most promising youngsters today, and arguably the hottest heel in the entire business. After a rough start to his career where he struggled to break out of his father's shadow as a babyface, Ex-Con Dom joined The Judgment Day in an epic heel turn that changed everything for him. Now, he is firmly his own man and a permanent fixture on Monday Night RAW.
Lately, tensions within Judgment Day have grown more and more visible, with Mysterio's exit from the group being heavily teased. The foundations have also been laid for Dirty Dom's solo career, with the 27-year-old defeating Damian Priest and facing singles champions Gunther and Bron Breakker on TV and in dark matches.
This has given fans an appetite to see the young superstar become the Intercontinental Champion in 2025. Given that it's the "workhorse title," it would be an incredible star-making moment for the man who had more matches than everyone in WWE except Cody Rhodes in 2023. It would also be the next step in his journey to becoming a future world champion.
#2: John Cena could become a WWE Grand Slam Champion by dethroning Dominik Mysterio
2025 will be the year of John Cena's WWE retirement tour, as The Champ wraps up his career as an in-ring performer. A big part of The Cenation Leader's farewell will revolve around tying up loose ends in his career and completing his illustrious legacy before hanging up the jorts. Given that he has never won the Intercontinental Championship, this could be high on the checklist.
The Hollywood Superstar could dethrone Dominik Mysterio to finally become a Grand Slam Champion, something that has eluded him for the 17 years since he became a triple crown champion. He could roll back the years with a short run marked by weekly open challenges before dropping the gold to the next entry on this list.
#1: Ludwig Kaiser could cement his rise as a WWE singles star by dethroning John Cena as Intercontinental Champion
WWE currently has many superstars who are already credible names as tag team specialists on the cusp of breaking out as singles competitors. Other than Dominik Mysterio, the likes of Montez Ford, Angelo Dawkins, and Austin Theory have teased following in Jey Uso's footsteps and going solo. Ludwig Kaiser is arguably the readiest to break out, going by his incredible performance at Survivor Series 2024.
The Imperium lieutenant is in the process of stepping out of Gunther's shadow and becoming his own man, with legends like The Undertaker tipping him for big things. 2025 is likely to be a big year for the German star and could bring with it his first singles gold. Imagine what a boost it would be for the 34-year-old's career to dethrone John Cena for the title his Ring General famously held!
We can definitely see The Cenation Leader putting over Kaiser with one of, if not his very last title reign.
