Brock Lesnar News: Is Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Cormier in jeopardy?
What's the story?
Is Brock Lesnar still going to fight Daniel Cormier for the UFC Heavyweight Title in 2019?
According to an interview with TMZsports.com, Dana White is unsure and has other potential plans.
In case you missed it . . .
Daniel Cormier won the UFC Heavyweight Championship by knocking out former champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 in July of 2018.
Lesnar, who was in the crowd during the fight, had been in negotiations with UFC for a potential return.
After Cormier won the title, Lesnar stormed the cage and the two heavyweights had words. Lesnar even jumped on the mic to address the situation.
He then defended it for the first time against challenger Derrick Lewis. Cormier submitted 'the Black Beast' in the second round to retain the championship at UFC 230 on November 3.
After his defence, speculation switched to who his next challenger would be, and many felt it would likely be the current WWE Universal Champion.
Lesnar regained the Universal Championship at Crown Jewel in October of this year after Roman Reigns had to relinquish the title due to recurrence of his leukemia.
Much of the promos from Paul Heyman in the lead up to the battle with Strowman for the title involved Heyman saying that he and Lensar wanted Brock to be the first person in history to simultaneously hold both the Universal Championship and the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
Lesnar has re-entered the USADA testing pool, so any potential UFC fight for Lesnar appears to be set in motion.
The heart of the matter
UFC head honcho Dana White was interviewed in Los Angeles recently and was asked about Daniel Cormier's future.
In the interview with TMZSports, White mentioned that he wasn't sure if the Lesnar/Cormier fight would go down, but did offer up another potential blockbuster - Jon Jones vs. Cormier 3.
"I'd obviously like to see Jones and Cormier fight again at heavyweight," White tells us ... "Cormier's team wants him to retire now. They want him to retire right now. I hope we can get 3 more fights out of him."
Cormier said he wanted to retire on his 40th birthday which would be next March. So that likely leaves him with one more fight if he follows through on his words.
What's next?
Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones are both huge fights for the UFC and Cormier. If he fights Lesnar, it provides the possibility of Lesnar concurrently holding the two major titles.
If Cormier doesn't fight Lesnar, it leaves a void for Lesnar's inevitable UFC return. He could also fight Stipe Miocic, Derrick Lewis or Francis Ngannou, but likely wants to fight for the title.
If Cormier does fight in March and it's against Jones, White said he'd like it to be for the Heavyweight Title.
Cormier has never defeated Jones and likely wants to rectify that before he ultimately retires from the UFC.
Whichever bout goes down will be huge for the UFC. Jones and Cormier have always hated each other and the war of the words would surely add to selling the fight.
After the planned angle after Cormier won the title off Miocic in July, some fans might be clamouring for the Lesnar/Cormier fight.
Either way, things are likely to change more than once between now and next March.
Will Cormier retire without a final fight? Who will Lesnar fight in his return to the Octagon?
