Impact Wrestling Rumors: Rey Mysterio finally joining Impact Wrestling?
What's the story?
Dave Meltzer noted on the most recent Wrestling Observer Radio that former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio could finally be making his Impact Wrestling debut soon and that Impact Wrestling officials are trying to get Mysterio signed for the tapings that begin this week in Orlando.
In case you didn’t know...
Rey Mysterio was in talks with Impact Wrestling back in the summer and was very close to signing a contract. Then Impact employee Karen Jarrett even teased on Instagram that he had signed. However, talks fell through.
At one point it was believed that Rey signing was a lock, and his debut had also been planned. GFW founder Jeff Jarrett was set to challenge Alberto to a match at Bound For Glory and pull out last minute due to an 'injury', only to be replaced by Rey Mysterio.
Jeff, of course, has now left GFW again, but apparently Rey had already passed on the GFW contract before Jeff left, so plans for Bound For Glory would have had to be changed anyway.
The heart of the matter
At this point, Mysterio signing with Impact seems just as close as it did back in the summer. However it will be interesting to find out what kind of contract Rey may potentially sign with Impact as it is well-known that they are cutting down on all upcoming expiring big money Impact deals. However, it was noted that no deal has been signed but there are still negotiations happening.
This was the main reason Impact original James Storm parted ways with Impact and is also heavily rumored to be the reason why Bobby Lashley, EC3 and Eddie Edwards may depart soon as well.
What’s next?
The tapings, on which Impact would like Rey to start on, begin filming this week. As of right now it seems to be 50/50 that a deal may be reached by the time the tapings begin. It is possible that it will happen as it was said that Alberto El Patron only signed his Impact contract on the day of his first appearance.
Author’s take
To see Rey Mysterio back in WWE one day would be fun but for now, signing with Impact may be the smarter move. Rey could work his way into a similar contract that El Patron has and also take part in independent shows at his own pace, which would have an easier toll on his body, compared to the gruelling schedule of WWE.
