What’s the story?

Former Ring of Honor World Champion and Bullet Club member Cody Rhodes recently spoke with Busted Open Radio in order to promote his upcoming clash against Kenny Omega at ROH: Supercard of Honor XII.

In case you didn’t know…

The issues between Cody Rhodes and Kenny Omega initially began last year during Omega’s IWGP Heavyweight Title match against Kazuchika Okada at NJPW: Dominion 6.11, when “The American Nightmare” proceeded to step in for Omega and wanted to throw in the towel on behalf of “The Cleaner”, in order to bring an abrupt halt to the match.

Also, as noted during last year’s G1 Special in the USA, Omega repeated the act when he proceeded to throw in the towel for Cody during his IWGP Heavyweight Title bout against Okada, but, “The Cleaner” was eventually prevented by Matt and Nicks Jackson, the Young Bucks.

However, at NJPW’s latest New Beginning in Sapporo show, Rhodes finally betrayed Kenny Omega, when he hit the former IWGP US Champion with a Cross Rhodes and further proceeded to attack Omega along with Hangman Page, before Omega’s former tag team partner Kota Ibushi stepped in to make the save for Kenny Omega and thus reuniting the Golden Lovers in the process, leaving the status of the Bullet Club’s leadership in question.

The heart of the matter

While speaking with Busted Open Radio, Cody Rhodes opened up about his vital clash against Kenny Omega at Supercard of Honor XII and also talked about the pressure of delivering a great match against Omega. Below are the highlights from the interview:

On facing Kenny Omega:

According to Rhodes, “The Best Bout Machine” Kenny Omega is an “underground band”, whose songs are pretended to be loved by everybody and following his classic bout against Chris Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom 12, “The Cleaner” is now apparently set to enter a new level of competition at Supercard of Honor where he squares off against Cody Rhodes for the very first time. “It’s a different level. You can’t just be the best wrestler that nobody has ever seen. This is a different level for me.”

On the pressure of delivering a great match:

Cody believes that both he and Kenny are certainly two different type of wrestlers in terms of what both of them bring to the game and what they’re capable of bringing in terms of in-ring competition.

However, despite the variation of in-ring style, Cody claims that there is definitely a ton of pressure on him right now and claims that he has never watched more wrestling in anticipation for a match to see if there’s something he could add into his game.

“I’ve never — I don’t know if it’s nerves — but it definitely feels like pressure. It’s a good pressure, this is where I want to be. This is where a few years ago I said I deserved to be, so at this point you have to ‘put up or shut up’ if you know what I’m saying.”

What’s next?

Cody and Omega will square off at ROH: Supercard of Honor XII on the 7th of April, in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Lakefront Arena.

Author’s Take

The on-going storyline involving Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, Bullet Club, and The Golden Lovers is indeed the most exciting and interesting storyline in Pro Wrestling right now, in my opinion. It is interesting to note, who eventually takes over the leadership in the Bullet Club.
