Bizarre reason why WWE released 29-year-old star they had huge plans for - Reports

This past weekend was an unfortunate one in WWE, as several wrestlers got released. The main reason was reportedly a lack of plans for all of them.

Von Wagner was among the superstars released by the Stamford-based company, as reported yesterday by Fightful Select. He was considered a main roster wrestler, which is why he got released. Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that Wagner's release was based on him not being used on RAW or SmackDown, despite still appearing on NXT.

This is because the second-generation star was called up as a free agent in the WWE Draft last year, with Xyon Quinn in the same boat. Despite that, Von Wagner returned to NXT and continued to feature on the Tuesday night show. He wrestled there as recently as the go-home show for the Stand & Deliver event:

"Even though [Von Wagner] was not working on the main roster - he was working in NXT - he is technically, like Xyon Quinn, they are main roster wrestlers. They were considered main roster wrestlers, therefore because they were not being used on the main roster the decision was made to dump them," Dave Meltzer said.

Meltzer further explained that the WWE brass felt that Von Wagner had been a main roster wrestler for a year and was not being used on RAW or SmackDown. So, like Xyon Quinn, he was released. This is an unfortunate situation.

WWE had high hopes for Von Wagner

The son of former WWE Superstar Wayne Bloom (fka Beau Beverly of the Beverly Brothers), Von Wagner was tipped to have a gigantic future in the business. Reports from previous years have indicated that the Stamford-based company wanted him to main-event WrestleMania one day.

While not impossible, it does not seem like Wagner will even appear at The Show of Shows. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 29-year-old star and if he will continue to wrestle.
