Disappointing update on Goldberg after he announces his WWE retirement - Reports
The wrestling universe is still coming to terms with Goldberg's WWE retirement being confirmed over the last week. The former Universal Champion is set to walk away into the sunset after one last match in 2025.
A few hours before Crown Jewel 2024, Golberg announced that he had spoken to the WWE executives about having his retirement match in 2025. Soon after, the promotion, too, shared his comments on their social media platforms, confirming that the legendary performer would receive a sendoff next year. As expected, fans quickly began to speculate about who his final opponent would be.
Considering the WCW legend appeared in the crowd at Bad Blood 2024 and teased a showdown with Gunther, many are expecting WWE to go ahead in this direction. However, as per Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline, the company was still undecided on when the dream match would take place. Meltzer also noted that the clash was not planned to go down at Royal Rumble 2025 early next year.
“Regarding the Bill Goldberg vs. Gunther match, we don’t have a date for it but were told it was not planned for the Royal Rumble show as things stand right now," wrote Dave Meltzer.
Matt Morgan wants Gunther to squash Goldberg in 10 seconds in the latter's final WWE match
On a recent edition of the Gigantic Pop podcast, Matt Morgan discussed how WWE could book Goldberg's retirement match against Gunther. Morgan firmly believes The Ring General should defeat the veteran in flat 10 seconds.
He added that though the 57-year-old star was a legend, it would only make sense to book him against Gunther if WWE was willing to get him squashed.
"He [Gunther] can still be champion and he needs to job Goldberg out in 10 seconds flat. It cannot be a back-and-forth match. [...] With respect to Goldberg, great career, one of the greatest streaks of all time, we all were fans of his, I was in college. He was one of the most over talents of all time during his height of his success. But we all get old, it is what it is, and Gunther would absolutely eviscerate him and he needs to eviscerate him," he said.
Gunther will be keenly watching this week's WWE RAW episode, where his next challenger for the World Heavyweight Title will be determined. Seth Rollins, Sheamus, Dominik Mysterio, and Damian Priest would go to war in a fatal four-way match to earn a shot at The Ring General's gold.
