Real reason why Kevin Owens attacked Cody Rhodes revealed - Reports
The war between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens has continued past the return of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event. Officials reportedly have significant happenings planned for the top Superstars as they approach the end of another year. Sources are now reporting new details behind what happened at SNME.
The American Nightmare retained the Undisputed WWE Championship over The Prizefighter in the main event of SNME XXXVII. After the match, the champion was destroyed by the challenger, taken out with a Package Piledriver, and then stretchered out. For one night only, Cody was allowed to wear the Winged Eagle version of the title, but KO stole the strap after the sneak attack.
WWE held a double SmackDown taping last Friday as the superstars will begin their holiday break after Monday's RAW. Fightful Select notes that this created a natural conflict as Cody and KO were unable to film anything in front of the SmackDown crowd for fear of spoiling the result of their SNME match that would be airing the night after the taped SmackDown.
Correspondents at the SmackDown tapings noted how Owens shot a backstage promo to air on this Friday's taped episode, which SK Wrestling has full spoilers for. The word from the locker room is that Owens' post-match attack on Rhodes at SNME was done to help "bridge the gap" with this week's TV shows. It was noted that the SmackDown crowd got to see Cody and KO live, and the company was able to get creative with its segments airing this week so that it did not leave the audience out in the cold.
As of this weekend at SNME, the plan was to air the SNME sneak attack, and likely KO's confrontation with Triple H, during Friday's taped SmackDown. There are also still plans to air the backstage promo from Kevin Owens on Friday's show, but there is no word yet on what sort of segment Cody Rhodes might have, if any.
Cody Rhodes update for the rest of 2024
Cody Rhodes is currently on hiatus for the Christmas holiday. The Undisputed WWE Champion is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, December 26, in Jacksonville, FL, to kick off the annual post-Christmas tour of non-televised live events.
The American Nightmare vs. Kevin Owens in a Steel Cage match is advertised for the tour shows in Jacksonville, Orlando, Miami, and Detroit. As of this writing, Cody is not scheduled to return to TV until the final SmackDown of the year on December 27 in Tampa, FL.
Cody Rhodes has been booked for recent RAW TV tapings to work the dark main event, but he is not scheduled for another red brand event until the Netflix premiere on January 6. His last Monday night dark match came on December 9 with a win over Carmelo Hayes.
