WWE not planning to add major championship match to SummerSlam 2024 card - Reports
SummerSlam 2024 is less than three weeks away and WWE has likely finalized the card - with only two matches announced so far. A new report has suggested that WWE is not planning to add a major title match to SummerSlam.
So far, only two matches have been made official for The Biggest Party of the Summer - Damian Priest vs Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship, and Bayley vs Nia Jax for the WWE Women's Championship. Both Gunther and Nia Jax earned title shots at SummerSlam by becoming the King and Queen of the Ring respectively.
According to Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is not planning to add the Women's Tag Team Title match to the SummerSlam card. Instead, it has been suggested that the champions might defend the titles on the SmackDown one night before the second biggest WWE show of the year:
What did Triple H say about the criticism regarding the lack of women on the SummerSlam 2023 card?
Last year's edition featured only two Women's matches - Asuka vs Charlotte Flair vs Bianca Belair for the WWE Women's Championship, and Ronda Rousey vs Shayna Baszler in a MMA Rules Match.
There was criticism about the fact that both the Women's World Championship and Women's Tag Team Championship weren't on the line at the event in Nashville. The Game defended the decision and said:
"My take on that is the same as it's always been. I don't see the difference. I look at the women in WWE just like I look at the men in WWE. They're talent, and it is irrelevant to me if they're female talent, male talent, doesn't matter to me. I put the same amount of thought, the same amount of process, and are just looking for things that are delivering in the moment," said Triple H.
He's certainly true to his word, although the decision to omit Rhea Ripley from the card was questionable as she was one of WWE's hottest stars in 2023.
