Should The Undertaker fight at WrestleMania 31 or retire?

Should Undertaker carry on?

As WrestleMania approaches, the spotlight is once again on The Undertaker, despite his absence since last year’s WrestleMania, where he lost his famous streak to the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar.

Until now, no one is sure about his return to the ring, as doubt exists over his health condition. Even if he comes back one last time and makes an appearance at WrestleMania 31, the intriguing question is who is going to be his opponent? And judging by the events that unfolded over the last few months in the WWE, should The Dead Man continue? or should he bring the curtains down on his glorious career and hence get inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame?

Possible Opponents

If ‘The Undertaker’ eventually decides to make a comeback at WrestleMania 31, there are not many opponents whom he can face. That’s because he has already faced most of the legendary superstars and no more than a few are available to compete against him. These are the four possible opponents he could face:

  • Sting – The most obvious opponent the Phenom might face at WrestleMania is the legendary Superstar Sting, who made his first ever appearance inside a WWE ring at Survivor Series. He openly stated that he wants one last big match and that too with ‘Taker.
  • Bray Wyatt – The Dead Man and Bray Wyatt share a similar evil persona. If WWE is looking at Bray Wyatt as the person who could fill the shoes of Taker in the years to come, then this is the best opportunity. Making the Lord of Darkness lose against him, will give Wyatt the much-needed push to his stardom.
  • John Cena - In the last decade, Cena rose to his prominence in WWE and became the face of the association. There is a widespread criticism that WWE is not portraying Cena as a heel despite being a top superstar. This might be the chance for them to build up a match between the two as they both haven’t met at the grand stage.
  • Brock Lesnar – Fans were disappointed and shocked to see the Beast breaking the undefeated streak of the Undertaker at WrestleMania 30. There are rumours that Lesnar will leave WWE and return to UFC after WrestleMania 31. In that case, this is the best chance for them to give something back to the fans by making the Phenom win.

Aftermath of WrestleMania 30

After the defining match at last year’s WrestleMania, the Undertaker was taken to hospital and is said to have suffered a concussion during the match. But after Sting spoke about facing him one last time in the ring, the rumours started to surface about the possible return of the Phenom at the grand stage.

However, he turns 50 next year and recent pictures of him show that he is not in the best physical condition to fight inside the ring. At the end of the day, health takes priority over everything else and hence The Undertaker must ensure that last year’s incident doesn’t repeat.

Protecting his Legacy

The Undertaker is currently the longest serving superstar in the industry and is a four-time WWE Champion, three-time World Heavyweight Champion. He has almost fought against all the top superstars and started his WrestleMania streak by winning against Jimmy Snuka at WrestleMania 7.

His unbeaten streak at WrestleMania includes wins against the likes of the record sixteen-time World Champion Ric Flair, thirteen-time World Champion Triple H and many more. His two WrestleMania matches against "The Heart Break Kid" Shawn Michaels are still considered to be the greatest WrestleMania matches ever and the aftermath of the second match saw HBK retire from action.

He has nothing left to prove or achieve and there were rumours that Brock Lesnar was handpicked by Taker himself to end the streak. So in that case, there is no point of him returning back to the ring.

Hence, he should consider retiring immediately, and, as a result, WWE should induct him into the Hall of Fame for the Class of 2015, since the likes of Edge and Shawn Michaels were inducted immediately after their retirement in recent years.
