SK Exclusive: Josh Mathews discusses the growth of Impact Wrestling
Most pro wrestling fans will know the name Josh Mathews courtesy of his tenure with World Wrestling Entertainment, but in the present day, his professional focus is solely on one thing – Impact Wrestling.
The 37-year-old play by play commentator has transitioned into becoming the voice of Impact in many ways, with comparisons being drawn between himself and Michael Cole at times. Mathews is instrumental in many things within the company, and during a recent teleconference, we were able to delve into the mind of the former Tough Enough runner-up.
SK: As Impact continues to grow as a brand, are there any major market or countries you’re looking to break into that you haven’t already explored at great length?
Matthews: Through GWN and Twitch, that opens up everything to a whole new world. We’re available everywhere – it’s hard not to get your hands on Impact in 2018. I was quoted a couple of weeks ago that more people watch the on-demand services in the United Kingdom than watch Spike. My point in saying that was that you can watch it at your leisure. You can watch it whenever you want to. I think that television has changed.
The confidence seems to be growing over at Impact Wrestling, and following a few years of great uncertainty, that’s a good thing to see. It’s always better for fans of the industry to have options, and as we progress through 2018, Impact is looking to become more prominent than ever before.
Mathews even hinted at a big upcoming announcement regarding WrestleCon, and we now know that he was referring to Impact Wrestling going head to head with Lucha Underground at their annual supershow next month in New Orleans.
If you’re in NOLA for WrestleMania weekend, then make sure you don’t miss it.
