SK Exclusive: Major update regarding The Undertaker's future
What’s the story?
After a quarter of a century, The Undertaker retired from WWE at WrestleMania 33.
However, our sources tell us that when The Undertaker dropped his gloves, hat and trenchcoat in the middle of the ring at the end of the show, he not only retired from in-ring competition but was also retiring The Undertaker character altogether and does not intend to play the character again under any circumstances.
In case you didn't know...
The 52-year-old Undertaker, whose real name is Mark Calaway, lost in the main event of WrestleMania 33 to Roman Reigns. Throughout his career, the Undertaker was a multiple world Heavyweight champion, a tag team title holder and a Royal Rumble winner.
His WrestleMania record ended at 23-2, however, he was once 21-0, until his 23-year unbeaten WrestleMania streak (he missed WrestleMania X and 2000) was ended at WrestleMania XXX in New Orleans, LA, by Brock Lesnar.
The Heart of the matter
Our sources have indicated to us that the gesture at the end of WrestleMania meant more than the end of Mark Calaway's wrestling career. It, in fact, signified the final end of The Undertaker character on the whole.
This means that Calaway will never play The Undertaker character ever again, be it in a segment or at the Hall of Fame. Although it will be The Undertaker character that goes into the Hall of Fame (much like it was the Razor Ramon character and not Scott Hall), Mark Calaway will never ever play The Undertaker character again.
What's next?
With Calloway laying The Undertaker character to rest, this will now open the door to us seeing more of Mark Calloway the man. Both the WWE and Calloway will want to continue their relationship in some capacity and it's likely that we may finally get a book and DVD with Mark Calloway's involvement talking about The Undertaker character.
Author's take
Although I don't want to see Mark Calaway on a pre-show panel, I am excited about the possibility of him finally talking and opening up about the character he played and protected for so many years.
The Mark Calloway autobiography would be the second biggest autobiography the WWE could possibly release, second only to Vince McMahon himself. However, as it stands right now, all we know for sure is The Undertaker is no more and what Mark Calloway will go on to do, is total speculation.
He protected The Undertaker for 27 years and could very well take it to the grave with him.
