WWE News: Surprise new champion crowned at Clash of Champions 2017
Our first title change of the night came straight out of the blocks at Clash of Champions and we now have a new United States Champion on SmackDown Live.
Dolph Ziggler picked up the W in his Triple Threat match against Baron Corbin and Bobby Roode, probably the last person people thought would win the opening match.
There had been many rumours surfacing that Ziggler was on the way out of WWE, almost exactly a year after his career was on the line against The Miz in a feud that seemed to rejuvinate The Show Off.
Ziggler has recently tried to reinvent himself as a "no gimmicks" character, having mocked many other stars' gimmicks prior to his rivalry with Bobby Roode, and he's recently been making his entrance to a shortened version of his theme tune, ending in a vinyl scratching and DZ walking down the ramp in complete silence.
The move came as a major shock mainly as the match was only meant to be Roode v Corbin, with Ziggler being added out of nowhere a few weeks ago on SmackDown Live, with many thinking he may only be added to eat the pin so neither Roode nor Ziggler would lose momentum, but in fact the exact opposite happened.
So, now the question is - is Ziggler's career back on track or is this one last title run before Ziggler calls it a day in WWE? He had previously spoken out about his dissatisfaction with his booking in WWE, and in particular the amount of losses he had been racking up. Ziggler had hinted he may take time away to further his comedy and acting ventures, with many people suggesting an indie run may give him a similar pay-off to that of Cody Rhodes.
There's no doubt that Ziggler is an underrated talent and one of the best in-ring performers, but many feel his character had started to go stale and the losses killed any momentum he may have had, but who knows? Maybe this could be the start of a new Dolph Ziggler.
I guess we'll find out on Tuesday.
