The original plan for WrestleMania 40? 4 big SummerSlam feuds teased on WWE RAW (July 8th, 2024)
Some big SummerSlam feuds were set up on the latest episode of WWE RAW following Money in the Bank. CM Punk explained his actions at the premium live event this past weekend but couldn't fool Seth Rollins.
The Wyatt Sicks resumed their torment of Chad Gable while Bron Breakker continued his mission to destroy Sami Zayn. Sheamus alluded to going after the Intercontinental Championship but was interrupted by Bronson Reed. Rather than squaring off at SummerSlam, the two will do battle on next week's RAW.
With only three weeks until The Biggest Party of The Summer, several seeds for the event were planted. The next four potential SummerSlam feuds emerged from the ashes of Money in the Bank on the latest episode of RAW.
#4. Multiple teams gunning for the Women's Tag Team Championship
The two most credible teams in the Women's tag team division - The Kabuki Warriors and the duo of Jade Cargill and Bianca Belar - have already lost the belts. Asuka and Kairi Sane were believable as a dominant team due to their WWE resumes.
Cargill and Belair took the titles from The Kabuki Warriors but lost them to the Unholy Union after a short reign. This week's RAW saw the official formation of the trio of Sonya Deville, Zoey Stark, and Shayna Baszler. As a duo, Stark and Baszler haven't been able to win singles or tag team gold.
The new pairing decimated Damage CTRL after the faction defeated Lyra Valkyria, Katana Chance, and Kayden Carter. The Women's Tag Team Champion confronted the new trio backstage to stake their claim to running the division. It seems like a multiple-team match for SummerSlam is on the cards and it may include Belair and Cargill.
#3. The groundwork for the Intercontinental Title match at SummerSlam
Sami Zayn and Bron Breakker already faced off at one premium live event and appear to be heading for another big showdown at SummerSlam. However, they may not be alone when WWE hits Cleveland.
After Breakker attacked Zayn following an in-ring exchange, Ilja Dragunov stepped up to challenge the hard-charging second-generation star. The two battled on RAW but Bron lost via disqualification after tossing a chair at Dragunov.
Sheamus tried to address never capturing the title but was cut off by Bronson Reed. It looked like a Fatal Four Way was in the works with Ludwig Kaiser until he suffered an injury a few weeks ago. The Mad Dragon seems like a fill-in for Kaiser in a potential four-man match for Zayn's title featuring the Champ, Breakker, and Sheamus.
#2. A dueling battle of Revenge and Brutality Tours
The drama between Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan has gripped RAW since WrestleMania 40. The groundwork was laid last summer after Ripley injured Morgan.
Morgan returned the favor but embarked on her Revenge Tour. That has extended to attempting to corrupt Dominik Mysterio and break up The Judgment Day. Dominik finally seemed to cave to the Women's World Champion on the latest RAW. However, Mami's return just happened to coincide with his actions.
Since the two haven't faced off one-on-one for the title, SummerSlam seems like a good bet. Dominik would obviously factor into the match, either by confirming his support of Ripley or betraying her by helping Liv Morgan retain the title.
#1. CM Punk and Seth Rollins were on a collision course for WrestleMania 40
Once CM Punk walked back into WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames last November, it was clear he'd be facing Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40. The Visionary was visibly upset with Punk's return and he just happened to be the World Heavyweight Champion.
Drew McIntyre inadvertently injured Punk during the Royal Rumble, taking the planned match off the table. McIntyre took The Second City Saint's place and the two have been feuding ever since.
An unfortunate fallout from the heated feud was Punk costing McIntyre and Rollins against Damian Priest at Money in the Bank. The Scottish Warrior cashed in his MITB briefcase but because of the former AEW star's actions, The Visionary lost the match and any future shots at the title as long as Priest was the champion. However, El Campeon told Seth to forget about the agreement and he will defend the title once again after his match against Gunther at SummerSlam.
The former World Heavyweight Champion expressed his frustrations on RAW and Punk halfheartedly apologized. If McIntyre and The Best in the Bank don't square off, Rollins vs. CM Punk is a potential blockbuster offering for SummerSlam.
