The Rock reveals original plans for Wrestlemania 29 main event
June 2011 to January 2013 was undoubtedly the hottest run of CM Punk’s career. He cut the famous pipebomb on John Cena in the lead up to their Money In The Bank match, which ended up being considered to be one of the greatest matches in WWE history.
He lost the title at Summerslam to Alberto Del Rio who had cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase just after he had retained against Cena.
Punk did get the title back at Survivor Series, thus beginning his epic 434-day title run, where he remained champion for the entire 2012. He wound up losing the title to The Rock at Royal Rumble 2013, the same pay-per-view which Saw John Cena winning the Royal Rumble match.
That Punk having a great title reign just so they could build to a Rock-Cena rematch left a sour taste in the mouths of several fans. Punk himself stated on Colt Cabana's podcast back in November 2014 that he was trying to pitch the fact that a Rock-Punk-Cena triple threat was the way to go, but WWE officials did not budge.
He said that he was ok even if it were an elimination match and he went after five minutes, but he really wanted that spot in the main event. The Rock-Cena rematch did do good a good buy rate, but the fans in the stadium couldn't seem to care less about the rematch.
During an interview on the set of his upcoming film Jumanji, The Rock revealed the original plans for the main event of Wrestlemania 29. He said that the original plan was for him to defeat CM Punk at Elimination Chamber, and not the Royal Rumble, for the WWE Championship. He then said that it would have lead to a triple threat match between himself, Punk and Cena.
The Rock said that he was well aware that people did not dig the main event rematch that happened as they had the previous year, but ultimately, it was not his call.
Had the match happened as originally planned, it would be more than likely that Cena would have won the WWE Championship, but seeing Punk in the picture would have added a different taste to the match, and fans would perhaps have not been so upset, or rather apathetic about Cena vs Rock 2.
Do you believe a Rock-Punk-Cena triple threat main event would have been better for Wrestlemania 29?
