5 potential WrestleMania XXX opponents for The Undertaker
The Undertaker is all set to return to the WWE at the night after Elimination Chamber, and that night we will come to know who is going to be his challenger for WrestleMania XXX. As of now, Brock Lesnar is leading the race to face Taker, but there are many other names that have come up recently. Sting, John Cena, Daniel Bryan and Sheamus, all have been named as potential challengers at some point of time. Here’s the analysis of every possible superstar who can face Taker at WrestleMania XXX.
Sting
It’s being said that Sting is closer than ever to a move to the WWE, but he hasn’t signed with the company yet. But when that happens, WWE Universe is going to expect and (in fact) want the WWE to make the Sting-Undertaker dream match at WrestleMania XXX.
A big reason that can make this match a reality is Sting’s willingness to wrestle with Taker at ‘Mania. As WrestlingInc.com reports: “Since Sting lives in the Dallas area, he is willing to meet up with The Undertaker and work out the match in private at Undertaker’s gym, over and over, to get it right.”
This is something you won’t get to see from Brock Lesnar, who returned to the company only for monetary benefits, and has to make just a few appearances prior to WrestleMania XXX. But, Sting is ready to spend extra days working on this match with Taker.
The only matter of worry for the WWE officials is Sting’s age (54), who is even older than The Phenom (48), but a veteran like Sting knows what people’s expectations are and if this match happens he is not going to disappoint.
Daniel Bryan
It looks highly unlikely that a match between Undertaker and Daniel Bryan would take place at WrestleMania XXX, but last month CageSides.com reported the following: “It is said that Undertaker asked to work with him (Daniel Bryan) at Mania this year.” If The Phenom himself has nominated Bryan’s name then WWE will of course consider the “Flying Goat” for a match against Taker at WrestleMania XXX, but the question is why make Bryan walk in that direction.
As it seems right now, Bryan will face Triple H at WrestleMania XXX and then chase the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and it seems logical, because a defeat at the hands of Taker at ‘Mania will only have a bad impact on his momentum, and a young guy like him should focus on building his career and leave the task of ‘getting buried’ with the veterans.
John Cena
A match between John Cena and The Undertaker will always be great, even in imagination. Cena is one of those few big names who haven’t faced The Phenom at WrestleMania, and fans have been talking about seeing a match between these two at WrestleMania for many months now.
But, strong rumors suggest that Cena might be facing Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania XXX. The Wyatt Family caused Cena a win over Orton at Royal Rumble and the very next night they attacked him again, making the fans assume if Bray is going to be Cena’s next opponent.
It looks likely that these two will be involved in a feud after the Elimination Chamber, because it doesn’t look like that Orton will lose his title at the PPV, as WWE is preparing for an Orton-Batista match for WrestleMania XXX. With Cena out of the title picture, he could face his opponent on standby: Bray Wyatt, who has the ability and the heat (after a win over Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble) to put on a great match with the 14-time World Champion at WrestleMania XXX. That means Cena vs. Taker cannot happen before 2015.
Sheamus
Since his return, Sheamus hasn’t involved in any feud, and it’s still undecided who will be his opponent for WrestleMania XXX. And this is his advantage over guys like Bryan and Cena who will be involved with The Authority and the Wyatt Family respectively. Sheamus also has an advantage over Sting, which is age. He is young, strong, a top superstar and can wrestle for nearly 25/30 minutes, which is the new standard of Undertaker’s WrestleMania matches.
If, in any case, Taker backs out of a match with Lesnar, then Sheamus will become the #1 choice to face Taker. It might not get enough heat as a Taker-Sting match but then The Celtic Warrior is the only top superstar who hasn’t been booked for WrestleMania yet.
Brock Lesnar
Lesnar has been an all-time favorite to face Taker at WrestleMania XXX. Lesnar vs. Taker is going be a great match because these two were involved in a great feud (which was won by Lesnar) over a decade ago, and fans also remember their confrontation at UFC 121. Also, with that experience these two can work out a great match together, and deliver one of the best matches in WrestleMania’s history.
The only problem is Lesnar’s rough wrestling style which will be a problem for the semi-retired Taker. As WrestlingInc.com has reported: “Regarding Lesnar vs. Undertaker, there had been some concern because Lesnar works such a physical style and Taker is in really rough shape physically. This is why there was some talk of Sheamus facing Taker.” Since Lesnar didn’t get a shot at Orton’s title, booking him against Taker would be good for Lesnar’s reputation and vice versa.
Both these superstars are set to appear at the night after Elimination Chamber, and then we might get the confirmation for this match. All we want to see is a great build up for their WrestleMania match, and for that Lesnar should devote extra (unpaid) time.
