#1 WCW is born – 21 November 1988
Media mogul Ted Turner would enter the ‘wrasslin’ business in 1988 by taking over Jim Crockett Promotions and renaming it World Championship Wrestling. Flagshipping WCW on his Turner Broadcasting System network, Turner would directly compete against the WWF till the 2000s, even driving the WWF to near dissolution at one point.
It would be on 21st November 1988 that Turner would sign the dotted line, confirming the takeover of JCP. Turner’s WCW would struggle in the early goings under the leadership of TV executives like Jim Herd and Kip Frey – But the promotion would turn over a new leaf under Eric Bischoff.
The creation of the nWo would alter the Monday Night wars in the favour of WCW and the evolution of Goldberg would accentuate the process.
However, WWE would reclaim the rating advantage after ushering in its’ ‘Attitude’ era and WCW would suffer from its inability to push new stars, eventually folding in 2001.
