UFC/MMA News: Conor McGregor embroiled in a legal trademark battle
What's the story?
Conor Mcgregor's battles just don't end in the Octagon as the 2-division UFC Champion now finds himself in a trademark war regarding his personal brands.
The Irish Mirror reports that McGregor has been trying to get 'Mystic Mac' trademarked for his products, that include a range of fragrances and toiletries among others. But the loudmouth Irishman seems to have hit a major roadblock.
In case you didn't know...
Conor Mcgregor last fought in the Octagon at UFC 205 in November 2016 when he defeated Eddie Alverez to become the first man to hold titles simultaneously in two different weight classes by capturing the Lightweight title.
McGregor took a hiatus owing to the birth of his child but sent the fans into a frenzied state by convincing Floyd Mayweather to come out of retirement for a megafight.
While Mystic Mac may have lost after ten grueling rounds, he emerged a winner from a financial standpoint. Regarding his UFC return, McGregor has reportedly been stripped of the Featherweight Championship due to inactivity and as things stand, there seems to be on word on his status with the promotion.
The heart of the matter
More than a fighter, McGregor is a businessman who aspires to have a bludgeoning lifestyle brand. However, MAC Cosmetics from New York aren't too pleased with their name being used for obvious reasons. A German Clothing company MAC is also amongst the anti-Conor party and are resorting to every legal procedure in a bid to stop the UFC star from getting the rights.
McGregor isn't done yet, though. The terms 'ChampChamp' and 'I am Boxing' are also on his list of names he wants to be trademarked. Retailing firm Migros have taken objection to the later as they have an 'I am' line of products. Sportswear company Champion have done the same regarding the iconic 'ChampChamp'.
What's next?
McGregor was originally slated to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 219 before his controversial antics at Bellator 187 enraged the UFC top brass.
In the meantime, Notorious is bust building up his business empire.
Author's take
Love him or hate him, can't ignore the man's vision and drive in life. Guess someone forgot to tell McGregor about the legal hassles that come along with creating a brand.
Nonetheless, we'll sure Mystic Mac will have his say at the end of the day.
