Sami Zayn (real name: Rami Sebei) was born in Laval, Quebec, Canada on July 12, 1984. He started his wrestling career in 2002 at a Canadian based independent wrestling circuit under the name McFly. He then changed his in-ring name to El Generico, a luchador gimmick from Mexico and wrestled with a mask.
He wrestled with the mask for more than ten years for multiple wrestling companies all around the world. Upon being signed with the WWE’s developmental brand NXT in 2013, he changed his name to Sami Zayn and made his WWE television debut without a mask. He had won the NXT Championship once, but got betrayed by his friend Kevin Owens and lost his title. He then made his main roster debut by being introduced by Bret “The Hitman” Hart to challenge for John Cena’s United States Championship but lost. Sami then won the Intercontinental Championship thrice. Sami Zayn is now in the prime of his career and is currently holding one-half of the Undisputed Tag Team Championship.
Before joining WWE, Zayn had worked for International Wrestling Syndicate from 2002 to 2009 and won IWS World Heavyweight Championship twice. From 2004 to 2013 he worked for ro Wrestling Guerilla (PWG) and won PWG World Tag Team Championship five times and PWG World Championship twice. He worked with Ring of Honor (ROH) from 2005 to 2012, and won ROH World Television Championship and ROH World Tag Team Championship titles. In 2007, El Generico traveled to Japan and worked for Dragon Gate promotion. In 2011 he made his appearance in DDT Pro-Wrestling in Japan and won the DDT Extreme Championship, KO-D Openweight Championship. He then returned to the U.S. and worked with Dragon Gate USA and EVolve in 2012. Sami Zayn also worked with other wrestling promotions across the world such as Westside Xtreme Wrestling (WXW) in Germany, Total Nonstop Wrestling (TNA), Leader Wrestling Association (LWA) in Peru, Xplosion Nacional de Lucha in Chile, Independent Wrestling Federation (IWF) in Russia, Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), Hart Legacy Wrestling (HLW), etc.
