When Bob Holly explained his real-life heat with Cody Rhodes
Long-time WWE fans might remember when Cody Rhodes formed a tag team with Bob Holly earlier in his career. While the two men often got along in front of the WWE cameras, their relationship behind the scenes was not always so good.
The highlight of Holly and Rhodes' tag team partnership came on December 10, 2007, when they defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch on RAW. The unlikely allies captured the WWE World Tag Team Championship to begin a 202-day reign with the titles.
Four years after going their separate ways as a tag team, Holly appeared on a 2012 edition of Ring Rust Radio. Discussing his partnership with Rhodes, the WWE veteran surprisingly revealed that their real-life relationship had deteriorated:
"I was pretty close to Cody. Near the end there, we kinda lost touch with each other. I think, if I'm not [mistaken], there was kinda a little bit of animosity there. We really kinda lost touch with each other, and I thought to myself, you know what, just let him be and let him do what he wants to do." [6:43 – 7:06]
Bob Holly and Cody Rhodes' tag title reign ended at WWE Night of Champions 2008 when the latter turned against his ally. In an unexpected twist, Rhodes teamed up with Ted DiBiase Jr. to defeat Holly in a handicap match.
Possible reason why Bob Holly and Cody Rhodes fell out
During their title reign, the former tag team defeated several duos, including Carlito & Santino Marella and Brian Kendrick & Paul London.
Bob Holly recalled how WWE fans often cheered louder for him even though Cody Rhodes was supposed to be the team's most popular star:
"I don't know if he was upset with me because whenever he would be in the ring, they wanted to get him over and stuff like that as a babyface. I'd be in the ring, even house shows, and they would chant my name, even if I was on the apron, and it's like, 'No, you guys are supposed to be chanting for Cody, okay?! He's the one in there doing the work.'" [7:22 – 7:44]
Holly added that Rhodes stopped talking to him towards the end of their tag team run. The six-time Hardcore Champion suspected that his former tag partner might have been jealous of his crowd reactions, but he did not know for sure.
