Why Brock Lesnar needs to win at SummerSlam
In a week’s time, Brock Lesnar will be facing CM Punk at SummerSlam in one of the most anticipated bouts in recent memory. Ever since Lesnar returned to the WWE, the fans wanted to see this match happen. With Lesnar and Punk being “Paul Heyman guys”, it was only a matter of time before the two forces collided.
With Heyman finally turning on CM Punk at the Money in the Bank PPV, the stage was set for Brock Lesnar – CM Punk at SummerSlam. The safest thing for WWE to do on Sunday would be to give CM Punk the victory over Brock Lesnar, and finally get his hands on his former best friend Paul Heyman, and that will probably happen. Brock Lesnar will probably then take a hiatus from WWE and come back to face another major name at a major PPV in the future.
Although putting Punk over would be the right thing to do, I for one want Lesnar to win the bout, and I have a couple of reasons for that.
When Brock Lesnar returned to the WWE, it was explained that the WWE management wanted to bring “legitimacy” to the product. Everyone knows that Brock Lesnar decided to quit WWE back in ’04 to move on to greener pastures, and do something he was passionate about. He then pursued football and played for the Minnesota Vikings. Brock then worked for NJPW and later, entered into the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). It was here that Lesnar earned his name as the best fighter in the world, and became the UFC Heavyweight champion, being ranked as the number one fighter in the world at a point.
Lesnar’s success outside of professional wrestling gave credibility to a “sport” which is otherwise seen as “fake” and “performed”. So when Lesnar came back to the WWE in 2012, he brought along with him a part of his fan base, as well as legitimacy to the WWE, being the toughest guy in the world! It was reported that WWE paid him big money, and gave him a flexible schedule, similar to The Rock. Brock’s first night ended with him giving John Cena an F5, and it looked like it was the beginning of huge things for Brock Lesnar in the WWE. At least that was how it looked.
Brock Lesnar then lost his very first match in the WWE, when he lost to John Cena. He did look dominant in the ring, and that didn’t hurt his credibility. The booking of the match was terrific, as it looked like Cena barely found a way to win the match. After that, Lesnar got into a program with Triple H, beating him last year, and thus winning his first match. For those of you who didn’t keep the count, that was 1 – 1.
That was when everything went south for Brock. Lesnar lost to Triple H in the return match at WrestleMania, at a point when Triple H didn’t need the win. They faced one final time inside a steel cage, which was atrociously booked. Brock was made to look weak, while Triple H dominated throughout the match, and Lesnar picked up the victory barely, thanks to Paul Heyman.
