Why Kane is not an effective authority figure
The expectations were sky high when Kane made his return after two months by attacking Wyatt family and the Miz, then those expectations reached space when the WWE decided to sport Kane inside a suit and make him an authority figure but just after one week, the new gimmick has already started to look stale.
Ever since his debut in the company, Kane has been a force which is unmatched inside the ring. And surprisingly his previous gimmick of the big red machine who manhandled his opponents never bored us though it was almost 15 years old. One has to admit that he is not physically the same as he was 15 years ago and after his stint with Daniel Bryan running its course, the decision of the creative team to give him a fresh look is understandable to the core.
For starters, Kane as an authority figure was definetly a brilliant move from the company for various reasons. It was a fresh change to the monster and at the same time it gave him more on-screen importance. But from the recent Raw, it was clear that his new gimmick simply lacked the uniqueness which was supposed to make him stand out from the rest. And as a result Kane has been transformed into one of the cardboard figures who stand in the background of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Simply speaking, it has become hard to differentiate the gimmicks of Brad Maddox, Vickie Guerrero and sadly Kane.
Though he showed some glimpses of his old face inside the suit, taking away the physical aspect from his game was a horrible decision. Instead of portraying him like a monster in suit that is willing to use his strength if necessary, the creative chose to go with much more relaxed obedient Kane much to the misery of the fans.
Imagining a man who used to destroy superstars like Undertaker being kicked down by Maddox and Vickie itself is a nightmare for the WWE universe. The last time I checked Maddox was a wannabe wrestler who had to settle as the general manager of Raw after failing to make the cut and Vickie was a figure who used to hide under the ring if she saw Kane. And now those two as gaining the upper hand over Kane, which makes him, look more like a tamed animal who has lost its ability to attack for survival. At the current situation of the company, where experienced main eventers are on the decline, saddling Kane to such a role has gone down as another missed attempt from the writers.
But the fact that it is still early times for the gimmick gives a glimmer of hope for the irritated fans. The writers could still project Kane as someone who is slowly spiraling down to madness without having the breathing space inside his suit. That is, the real Kane that we love would break out of the cocoon and destroy everything that has been controlling him so far. That could go very well with the fans as it would see Triple H as an owner who is keeping an unpredictable monster as his pet. But for now, Kane’s new gimmick has turned out to be a mess which needs to be cleared as soon as possible. Then again, who wants to see the big red machine clamped as cardboard in the background instead of kicking some nuts inside the ring?
