Two weeks ago, RAW Commissioner Stephanie McMahon announced on RAW that the WWE Universe will witness an all-women's Royal Rumble match in 2018! This is groundbreaking news for anybody involved in professional wrestling.

Royal Rumble 2018 will be the 31st Royal Rumble event and while the details of the format of the match (in comparison to the annual men's Royal Rumble) are somewhat hazy, it is set to be a historical evening. WWE boasts arguably the best women's division in its illustrious history and the tenacious female superstars have broken down every barrier in their path.

They've competed in Money In The Bank matches, faced each other inside the ominous Hell In A Cell and now for the first time on January 28th, the women will give it their all to compete for their spot in the main event WWE Women's Championship match at Wrestlemania 34.

This match will make history. Long gone are the days of a wholly male-dominated sport watched by male fans, with women being used on wrestling television as sex-symbols or managers. It was long overdue that the women of WWE take the power into their hands and earn their rightful places on WWE programming.

The talent, determination and hard work it takes to be a travelling WWE superstar in the modern era is more intense than ever and the women involved with WWE are proving themselves as indispensable to the functioning of the business every single week.

The first woman to make history and set foot in the Royal Rumble match was Chyna in the 1999 'Rumble. Another woman wasn't featured in the match until Beth Phoenix entered at #6 in 2010. Kharma was the third woman to enter a 'Rumble in 2012.

The quality of the talent potentially involved in this Royal Rumble match is something that WWE and the women's division are extremely proud of.

Paige returned with her new group Absolution back in November and as dominant and tightly-knit as this group have been in the squared circle over the past month, the women will need to re-think their alliance to one another as there is no such thing as 'friends' in a Royal Rumble match. This has left many wondering what their game plan will be, come January 28th.

From cutting her teeth in Japan to dominating NXT before finally making her way to Monday Night RAW, Asuka will be trying to cement her place in this landmark event. She is currently on the longest undefeated streak in WWE history and Asuka will no doubt be doing everything she can to carry the streak onto Wrestlemania should she be victorious in the Royal Rumble match.

Another superstar to watch out for is Nia Jax, who is yet to win her first WWE women's championship. She has been in the limelight both in the ring and in the locker room recently and she needs to be cautious that her developing relationship with Enzo Amore won't take her mind off the biggest prize in the WWE women's division today.

WWE Raw Women's Champion Alexa Bliss, although filled with pride of the accomplishments of the women's division, will no doubt be watching her potential Wrestlemania opponents with an eagle eye in the run-up to the Royal Rumble.

As with every Royal Rumble, there are always surprises. The WWE Universe will be keeping their eyes and ears peeled for any potential clues as to surprise entrants in the women's Rumble match. Some rumours have already been circulating on social media but we are yet to learn of any officially confirmed appearances for the women's Royal Rumble match.

The women's revolution continues on into the New Year as the WWE Universe ready themselves to witness history. The women's Royal Rumble match will be an unforgettable start to 2018!
