WWE: Alberto Del Rio must lose his World Heavyweight Title soon
The World Heavyweight Title has been around the waist of Alberto Del Rio for more than six months now. For long, fans have been complaining about how stale Del Rio has been as a champion and have stressed on a need for a new champion.
Del Rio is a masterful in-ring performer. The intensity of his kicks, his heelish attitude while wrestling and his ability to bring out the best matches with almost everyone makes him a special wrestler inside the ring.
Del Rio was born to be a heel. He has the aura around him to generate heat that is both kayfabe and legitimate. His run as a babyface clearly showed that he struggled to connect with the crowd. Not that he connects well now, but as a face there was no relevance to his character in any way.
Del Rio’s greatness as a heel was better displayed when he destroyed his ring announcer and good friend Ricardo Rodriguez. The intensity and the force with which he landed kicks surely must have given Ricardo sore mornings for the next few days. He also showed frustration over Sin Cara after he botched another move and injured himself.
Del Rio continued attacking Cara even though the referee called the match. This event showed some real life heel moments of Del Rio. Plus, Del Rio is one of the most dependable wrestlers in the roster, who can perform a great match with almost anyone. His agility, skill and flair inside the ring has enabled him to stay in the main event picture for this long.
There is no doubt that ADR is a great in-ring performer and heel, but the question that needs to be asked is whether Del Rio has done justice as the champion? Del Rio’s inability to connect with the crowd has made him a very stale champion. One main reason why Del Rio has failed at this is because he was pushed way too early in his career. Del Rio was given the WWE title even before the fans could recognize him.
His current run with the Wold Heavyweight Title has greatly affected the value of the title. As if the title wasn’t in a slump already, Del Rio has managed to take the title to a new low. As a champion, the best thing that Del Rio has managed to do is make the World title equivalent to the Intercontinental title.
This is pretty relevant from the fans who aren’t in any way interested in the World Heavyweight title scenario. The return of RVD brought some attention to the title but it has started to fade again now that RVD is more involved with the corporation.
It is time Del Rio and WWE shook things up a bit and make his presence in the ring interesting. Despite having better mic skills than the likes of Orton and RVD, Del Rio hasn’t been able to step up as a strong champion. One reason for that could be WWE’s portrayal of Del Rio as a Mexican, which has been donned by several other superstars.
It is high time Del Rio dropped the title before his character devalued it further and got into some character building feuds that could help his future in the company.
