Is Bad News Barrett’s injury a blessing in disguise?
I like to look at things in a positive way. Like the old saying goes, it depends on how you perceive things; you can either look at the glass half empty, or you can look at it half full. The same goes in the world of professional wrestling. Often, you have to take bad with good. Wrestling fans need to understand that you don’t always get what you want. While some want John Cena to become the new WWE World Heavyweight champion and have a long run with the title, there is a huge section of the fan base who’d rather stop watching the WWE than see Cena holding the title again for a long period. You can’t always satisfy everyone, and Vince McMahon and the WWE know that more than anyone else. In such cases, you need to swallow the bitter pill and look at the positives rather than the negatives.
Similarly, a superstar’s injury can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. While an injury is never a good news for anyone, the outcome can see a good pay off; when Bret Hart decided to take some time off in 1996, Shawn Michaels became the WWE champion and the face of the company. When Shawn Michaels needed to take some time off in 1998, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin became the new champion, and kick started the Attitude Era in the WWE. Various superstars grabbed the opportunity with both hands and became legends, and a similar situation has presented itself, with Bad News Barrett getting injured, and consequently was taken off the Money in the Bank PPV card.
This opportunity has presented two interesting scenarios: With one spot now open, we can see another superstar added to the ladder match, and against all odds win the match. The second scenario would be a returning superstar being added to the ladder match. Either way, it would be good news for the fans, as it’ll present an interesting change in the dynamic of the PPV. Someone like Dean Ambrose, who doesn’t have a match on the PPV, but has threatened to spoil Triple H and Seth Rollins’ plan and the entire PPV itself, can now be added to the ladder match. Ambrose is one of the best talents on the roster, and it won’t surprise a lot of people if he gets added to the ladder match now that Barrett is injured, and may even win the bout by retrieving the briefcase.
Also, there have been rumors about Chris Jericho returning to the WWE this year. Jericho was originally slated to return at the Money in the Bank PPV, and that can still happen, as WWE has managed to keep a few returns as a surprise in the past. With Jericho coming back to the WWE, we can witness some outstanding bouts between Jericho and Daniel Bryan, and other interesting feuds between the veteran superstar and talents who are regarded as the future of the company. With Jericho claiming that he still has one more return left in him, it would be wise on WWE’s part to bring him for one last run with the organization.
I know that all the Bad News Barrett fans will be disappointed with him getting injured, but superstars get injured all the time. Not too long ago, Daniel Bryan suffered similar fate, and was stripped off the WWE World Heavyweight championship. Bad News Barrett was seen as a legitimate contender going into the ladder match this Sunday, and although this will put him on the sidelines for the time being, he can come back and pick up from where he left off. Barrett has been one of the most unfortunate superstars, missing out on opportunities, similar to Mr. Kennedy in the past. He was rumored to receive a massive push last year, but was injured during the WrestleMania season. Although it will be difficult for him to let go of another opportunity, the WWE can make the most of it by giving the shot to another superstar, such as Dean Ambrose.
In the end, one person’s loss is another man’s gain, and the same applies to the superstars. By no means will this be a hurdle in the career of Bad News Barrett, but the Intercontinental champion will have to wait one more year to earn the opportunity to win the Money in the Bank briefcase, and hopefully, will win the match and earn the opportunity to become a world champion.
