WWE/CHIKARA News: British Strong Style wins CHIKARA's King of Trios
What's the story?
Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate and Trent Seven, collectively known as British Strong Style, have become the first ever British winners of CHIKARA's annual King of Trios. The Midlands trio defeated 2016 winners Sendai Girls in the final of the tournament, held in Wolverhampton (United Kingdom).
In case you didn't know...
King of Trios is a three-night tournament promoted by CHIKARA, one of the most popular independent professional wrestling companies on the planet. The tournament is CHIKARA's premier event and includes 16 teams of three doing battle in a single elimination six-person tag team tournament.
The 2017 edition took on a Game of Thrones theme, with every team being presented as a house. It was also the first time that the tournament took place outside of the USA, with the three-day extravaganza being promoted in Wolverhampton, UK.
The first King of Trios was held back in 2007 and was won by Jigsaw, Mike Quackenbush and Shane Storm. A number of modern greats have competed in the tournament, including Daniel Bryan, Cesaro, AJ Styles and The Young Bucks.
The heart of the matter
British Strong Style (known as House Strong Style here) went into the tournament as favourites, and the trio from the West Midlands lived up to that billing. After defeating House WhiteWolf (A-Kid, Adam Chase & Zayas), the WWE UK trio came up against CHIKARA veterans House Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield, Mark Angelosetti & Simon Grimm) in the second round.
After disposing of The Throwbacks, BSS defeated House Rot (Hallowicked, Frightmare & Kobald) via forfeit in the semifinals before besting 2016 winners House Sendai Girls (Cassandra Miyagi, Dash Chisako & Meiko Satomura) in the final.
Elsewhere in the tournament, current Campeonatos de Parejas Los Ice Creams won the Tag Team Gauntlet (last eliminating CCK) and Ophidian picked up his second Rey de Voladores, pinning Jody Fleisch for the win.
What's next?
With rumours of WWE's UK show picking up once again, this could well be one of the final major independent appearances for Dunne, Bate and Seven. The trio will also be in action at PROGRESS's back Alexandra Palace show this coming Sunday, with Dunne defending the PROGRESS World Championship against Travis Banks, whilst Bate and Seven defend the tag belts against CCK in a ladder match.
Author's take
King of Trios has long been one of the most entertaining tournaments in wrestling, but CHIKARA itself has struggled somewhat over the last few years. The promotion had huge momentum back in early 2012 and amassed great intrigue after its disappearance, but has been unable to build on that.
British Strong Style have had an incredible 2017, and the King of Trios title is just another feather in their immensely decorated caps.
