WWE News: Kenny Omega speaks about G1 Climax win, calls out John Cena

Kenny Omega, won the G1 Climax 2016.

Kenny Omega has, on more than one occasion, beaten the odds to capture the hearts of pro-wrestling fans from all over the world. His victory at NJPW’s G1 Climax was one of these moments where he made his mark in NJPW as the first North American to have won the tournament. Omega has defeated Japan’s finest including fan favourite Hirooki Goto (winner of Block A in the tournament) in the tournament final and stated that he wishes to challenge IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada at the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 11.

When asked about other wrestlers like John Cena and the former Shield members Kenny Omega frankly stated that they are just not at his level, “physically or mentally”. He clearly disapproves of the notion that wrestlers like John Cena could do what he did to achieve his victory in the G1 Climax and states that he’s not even in character when he says that. It’s not that John Cena or his peers aren’t great performers, Omega adds; it’s just that the physical demand and what is expected out of the wrestlers in the two clearly different styles of wrestling (WWE and NJPW) are so different, no one from that world could come even close to doing what Kenny does.

Omega admits to sounding a bit egotistical in the earlier statement and mentions that if the situation was reversed, it would be impossible for him to maintain a daily routine of always staying on the move or attending regular charity events like Cena does. To him, it’s apples to oranges in comparison and he states that both he and Cena deserve each other’s respect for doing what they do no matter how different their styles and attitudes may be.

Omega also mentioned, when asked about his future in pro-wrestling, that he’s trying to make a mark on the world no matter where he might end up, but also states his wish to eventually leave his legacy in Japan and that this G1 was a big part of that.

It is important to note that Kenny Omega used to be in the WWE developmental programme in the early days of his career and that there have been rumors going around that WWE wants to sign Kenny Omega in 2017 but all of that remains to be seen.
