WWE Money in the Bank 2024 - Best and Worst - John Cena announces his retirement; unfortunate waste by Triple H
Money in the Bank 2024 was a mixed show. While there was not a single bad match on the card, WWE made a lot of questionable booking decisions. This has cleared up the pathway for SummerSlam 2024, while there is still some confusion.
So, with that in mind, let's look at the biggest positives and negatives from Saturday's premium live event.
#3. Best/Worst: Cody vs. Solo at SummerSlam, but a star is born at Money in the Bank
WWE booked themselves into a corner with the main event of Money in the Bank. There really could have only been one outcome: The Bloodline wins. However, it means that Solo Sikoa will likely main event SummerSlam against Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship after pinning The American Nightmare.
That is not the most inspiring decision, as it seems like Roman Reigns' potential return will overshadow the match anyway. It remains to be seen what Randy Orton and Kevin Owens do next.
For all the issues regarding SummerSlam, though, there was one big positive here: Jacob Fatu. WWE's newest signing had an incredible in-ring debut at Money in the Bank. The Enforcer has a scary combination of menacing and athletic, as he played a part in the finish. Big things lie ahead for Fatu!
#2. Worst: A disappointing loss
Triple H's insistence to hold off on big title changes has been detrimental to recent shows. A few such instances happened at Money in the Bank, including one with one of WWE's most promising stars.
Bron Breakker should have won the Intercontinental Championship from Sami Zayn, but instead lost clean to one Helluva Kick. This may have damaged his momentum following weeks of destruction.
A title change would have made this show feel bigger, but instead, we are wondering if Breakker will be fine following his first main roster loss.
#2. Best: It's Tiffy Time!
Money in the Bank, at its best, is a star-making tool. Lots of major names found major success courtesy of the briefcase and, hopefully, it's Tiffany Stratton's turn to climb the figurative ladder. She won the 2024 Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match following an epic spot-filled contest.
The 25-year-old star has a bright future ahead of her and is seemingly guaranteed to become the WWE Women's Champion in the coming year. This was the right call, even if Chelsea Green would have been equally entertaining as Ms. Money in the Bank. Anyway, expect a custom briefcase on SmackDown soon!
#1. Worst: The same thing again
Damian Priest retained his World Heavyweight Championship at Clash at the Castle 2024 by pinning Drew McIntyre after interference from CM Punk. Priest then retained his World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank by pinning McIntyre after interference from Punk.
The circumstances may have been different, but they make this worse. WWE essentially sacrificed the men's Money in the Bank contract for a year just to further the already intense feud between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk. Somebody else could have benefited from holding the briefcase.
Furthermore, Damian Priest retaining the title was not the ideal outcome either way. Seth Rollins would have been a better option to face Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2024.
We didn't even get any Judgment Day shenanigans, which seemed anti-climactic given the tension between Priest and the rest of the group.
#1. Best: The John Cena retirement tour begins soon
Possibly the biggest headline from Money in the Bank, John Cena announced he will retire from WWE in 2025. While the exact date is yet to be confirmed, the 16-time World Champion's farewell tour will kick off on the first episode of RAW on Netflix next year.
Announcing this in advance would raise expectations, but it gives WWE enough time to ensure Cena's final year in the ring is rich in storytelling. Hopefully, he can still keep up in the ring, having not won a singles match since April 2018.
From Royal Rumble 2025 to WrestleMania 41, every time John Cena steps in the ring before he retires presents an opportunity to do something memorable. The Hollywood star needs a few wins, though, so there is some value in beating him as he ends his in-ring career.
