AJ Styles and Shawn Michaels talked about the match that they were rumoured to have at this year’s Royal Rumble. This discussion is part of an episode of Table for 3 that will air after tonight’s Raw.

In case you didn’t know...

The Phenomenal One has spoken about idolising Shawn Michaels and wanting to face him in a match on numerous occasions. In fact, Styles even tweeted a fan-made poster that promoted a match between him and HBK at the Royal Rumble; this naturally set the internet ablaze with speculation.

The heart of the matter

In the preview of the episode, AJ Styles said that he was hoping to work with Shawn Michaels at the Royal Rumble. HBK said that while he was happy that his name was still relevant, he had no intentions of stepping back into the squared circle. The Show Stopper also praised Styles as a performer and described the Georgia Pitbull as someone he could have had an incredible match with.

Michaels also claimed that Vince McMahon offered him an opportunity to have the dream match. Needless to say, we all know how that conversation ended.

Author’s take

While Michaels’ resolve to honour his retirement is admirable, you can’t help but salivate at the prospect of a match between him and AJ Styles. However, this is destined to remain as nothing more than a fantasy.

Rumour has it that HBK turned down the opportunity to wrestle Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 30. If he wasn't interested in facing his former protege, odds are we will never see Shawn Michaels in the ring again.
