WWE News: AJ Styles reveals real reason behind Baron Corbin's title shot
What’s the story?
AJ Styles was recently interviewed in Osaka, Japan about his upcoming United States Championship defence against Baron Corbin on next week’s episode of SmackDown Live.
On that note, Styles started off by reiterating his respect for the Japanese fans, following which he issued a stern warning to Corbin, asserting that the Lone Wolf would have to go one-on-one with him.
Additionally, Styles explained that although the US title ‘Open Challenge’ was an opportunity for performers to prove their mettle, the real reason behind Corbin’s title-shot was for the Phenomenal One to teach him a lesson.
In case you didn’t know…
AJ Styles is the current WWE United States Champion and, being a fighting champion, often puts his belt up for grabs as part of the Open Challenge, whereby any SmackDown performer can challenge for the aforementioned title.
Speaking of the US Championship, Corbin is now set to challenge Styles for the belt on next week’s episode (9/19/2017) of SmackDown Live.
The heart of the matter
AJ Styles spoke about his great memories in Osaka, whilst displaying a considerable deal of respect and gratitude towards the fans.
However, Styles appeared to turn on the heat and fire off a few verbal jabs at the man who’ll challenge him for the United States Championship next week— Baron Corbin. Here are a few excerpts from his conversation regarding the Lone Wolf’s title-shot:
“I think it’s time to show Baron Corbin what these people already know, that when you step into the ring with me you’re stepping into the ring with the most phenomenal athlete at what we do today.”
“Now, usually, the Open Challenge is for guys who want to take that opportunity to the next level—a kind of a reward for hard work. (However), Baron Corbin, this is no reward for you, (but) what this is, is me teaching you a lesson.”
What’s next?
AJ Styles defends his United States Championship against Baron Corbin on the September 19th episode of SmackDown Live which goes down at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
