WWE News: AJ Styles talks about why he thinks John Cena is a better competitor than him

AJ Styles had a fairytale 2016 where he won the WWE Championship just months after his debut

What’s the story?

AJ Styles was on the Gorilla Position podcast recently with James Delow. The Phenomenal One spoke about his Wrestlemania 33 match with Shane McMahon, part-timers in WWE and John Cena being a better competitor than him.

In case you didn’t know...

AJ Styles made his debut in the WWE at the Royal Rumble in 2016. Styles made an impact right away putting up some spectacular matches with the likes of Chris Jericho, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and of course, John Cena. Styles went on to become the most successful wrestler in the WWE in 2016 winning the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose at Backlash. He also had two singles victories over John Cena before Cena pulled one back at the Royal Rumble, earlier this year.

The heart of the matter

AJ Styles was all praise for John Cena. Styles told James that he had no shame in accepting the fact that John Cena was better than him. Styles pointed out that he learned a lot from the Leader of the Cenation during their storied rivalry. He revealed that the reason for the high quality of their matches was the fact that John Cena did some small things in the ring that added to make the match look spectacular.

Styles said that at one point he was hesitant about doing some of the spots that Cena suggested, but was later convinced that it was indeed for the better. Styles noted that he and Cena have worked in the business for almost the same time, but John Cena far excelled when wrestling big matches with some of the greatest names in the business.

Styles also spoke about the issue of part-timers taking up big matches on the Wrestlemania card. He had a positive attitude about the situation saying that there was nobody who could match up to the drawing power of Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg at the ‘Showcase of Immortals.’

What’s next?

AJ Styles will be heading into the Ultimate Thrill Ride, Wrestlemania 33 to face Shane McMahon. In just a matter of seven days, AJ Styles went from being fired to having a high profile match at Wrestlemania with the unconventional, and unpredictable Shane McMahon as his opponent.

Author's Take

John Cena is, without a doubt, one of the biggest draws in the wrestling business. He may not be the most technically gifted wrestler in the world, but he has a certain charisma about himself that turns any match that he is involved in, to a must-see encounter. AJ Styles is right when he says that Cena is an all-time great but whether he is better than The Phenomenal One is a question for another day.

AJ Styles has been put over by many including Kurt Angle and Daniel Bryan as the best wrestler on the WWE roster at the moment. The Georgia Bulldog praising John Cena is just another testimony to the fact that he is a humble person himself and appreciates what John has done for the business.
