WWE News: Asuka's streak reaches 165

Asuka’s streak has now reached 165

What’s the story?

NXT Women’s Champion Asuka faced Mandy Rose last night at an NXT Live Event in Crystal River, Florida. The NXT Women’s Championship was on the line, but the winner was never in doubt as Asuka swiftly defeated the former Tough Enough Contestant.

In case you didn’t know...

Asuka made her NXT in-ring debut on October 7, 2015. She won the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: Dallas on 2nd April, 2016 and is the champion to this day. She is still unpinned in WWE and looks unbeatable at the moment. Asuka faced her toughest challenger to date, Ember Moon, earlier this month at NXT TakeOver: Orlando, picking up the win in dubious fashion.

Last year, Asuka was ranked third in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s list of the top 50 female wrestlers on the planet.

The heart of the matter

Asuka’s win over Mandy Rose takes her to an undefeated streak of 165 matches which leaves her just 8 matches short of tying Goldberg’s iconic 173 – 0 undefeated streak in WCW which is heralded as one of the most famous unbeaten streaks in pro wrestling.

Asuka has looked insurmountable from the top of the NXT Women’s Division, and it looks like she is well on course to break Goldberg’s record.

What’s next

Asuka is still waiting to find out who her next challenger will be. At the moment it looks like it will be a rematch against Ember Moon at NXT TakeOver: Chicago. If Asuka has beaten the streak by then, she may finally lose and drop her title to Ember Moon before moving to the main roster.

Author’s take

Breaking Goldberg’s streak is no mean feat. If WWE handles Asuka right, it could have a massive star on its hands.
