What's the story?

In a recent interview that former WWE writer Brian Solomon had with the Wrestling Observer, Solomon revealed that he pitched an idea to Stephanie McMahon about Brock Lesnar's character being gay.

In case you didn't know...

Lesnar made his main roster debut in the WWE in 2002. It was an impressive first year for Brock as he won the King Of The Ring tournament, feuded with The Undertaker, and became WWE Champion only a few months after his debut.

The heart of the matter

Solomon stated that Lesnar wouldn't exhibit any of the stereotypes of certain gay men such as "prancing around", but would be a complete a** kicker. Lesnar would never make an issue of the matter, but if a heel made fun of his sexuality, then he would take it upon himself to crush that heel, making him a huge babyface in the process.

According to Solomon, Stephanie liked the idea of a "strong gay character" as it would make the WWE look good with the progressive community.

Brock wasn't so sure of the idea so WWE creative scrapped it, and eventually gave it to Billy & Chuck (Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo) who had some success with the gimmick, and even won the WWE Tag Team Championship on two occasions.

What's next?

Brock Lesnar faces his biggest test to date on September 24th when he puts his WWE Universal Championship on the line against Braun Strowman at No Mercy.

Leading up to this title match, Strowman manhandled Lesnar in a way we have rarely seen happen to "The Beast Incarnate".

Author's take

There's a good side and a bad side to the idea of Lesnar's character being gay. The good side is they wouldn't use stereotypes and portray the character as a normal man who stands up for himself, but using violence anytime someone made fun of his sexuality would be sending a bad message.

If written properly, it would be a fascinating story and character today. It was a different time in 2002 though, and we could have looked back on it with disgust, and for that, I'm glad they didn't go through with it.
