WWE News: Charlotte Flair discusses her upcoming WrestleMania match against Asuka
What’s the story?
WWE Smackdown Live Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair was recently interviewed by Barstool Sports ahead of her mega clash against “The Empress of Tomorrow” Asuka at WrestleMania 34, next week in New Orleans.
In case you didn’t know…
Following her successful title defense against Ruby Riott at the Fastlane pay-per-view, Smackdown Live Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair was involved in an altercation with the winner of the first ever WWE Women’s Royal Rumble, Asuka, who as noted, went on to challenge “The Queen” to a one-on-one match at WrestleMania for the Smackdown Live Women’s Title.
The heart of the matter
During her interview with Barstool Sports, Charlotte Flair spoke about a host of topics and below are a few highlights from the interview: (H/T: 411Mania)
Charlotte said she has been doing pretty well, following her recent dental surgery. However, despite a successful surgery, the WWE decided to keep the Smackdown Live Women’s Champion off TV, because her gums were apparently swollen and she was seemingly talking in a funny manner from the stitches.
“I’m good. They just kept me off TV because it was so swollen and I was talking funny from the stitches. They cleared me to wrestle, but I just looked a mess. So, I’ll be back next week.”
Charlotte revealed that following Asuka’s Royal Rumble win back in January, “The Queen” was hoping that “The Empress of Tomorrow” would pick her as her opponent for WrestleMania 34, because according to Charlotte, she wanted to face Asuka in a one-on-one contest but didn’t know anything for sure until the Fastlane pay-per-view.
“[At the Royal Rumble] I was standing there hoping that everyone in ‘Gorilla’ or the writing team watching going, ‘She has to pick me. I’m the only logical pick. She has to pick me!’ and then Ronda [Rousey’s] music hits, and I’m like, ‘No, she still has to pick me’ because I wanted to face Asuka that bad and I didn’t know. I didn’t know – I kind of heard rumblings – but I didn’t know for sure until Fastlane.”
Charlotte Flair believes that the maximum respect and support of the WWE Universe and even fans worldwide, because of her different and unique style. However, one of the sole reasons why Charlotte wants to go toe-to-toe with Asuka is because the two ladies have previously never squared off in a one-on-one match nor in a tag team match.
“She has so much respect from the WWE Universe and fans worldwide, and she’s different. For me, it’s more because I’ve never faced her. No one’s even seen a singles, a tag, nothing from NXT. I mean, we have never crossed paths and that is very special in our industry. Because I mean, you’ve at least wrestled once, right? How have we never touched?”
What’s next?
Charlotte Flair and Asuka will lock horns at WrestleMania 34 next week in New Orleans with the Smackdown Live Women’s Title on the line.
Author’s Take
Asuka and Charlotte Flair now have the opportunity to steal the show at ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’ and I think that the two former NXT Women’s Champions will take the Women’s Revolution in the WWE to the next level, all thanks to their forthcoming WrestleMania match.
