What's the Story?

Whilst Alexa Bliss may be enjoying the well-earned status of best heel in the WWE Women's division at the moment, let's not forget just how good and dominant Charlotte was when she was ruling over the rest of WWE's female wrestlers as their queen. It turns out Charlotte hasn't forgotten either as she revealed in a recent interview with Los Angeles Times that she misses playing the bad guy.

In case you didn't know...

Charlotte quickly rose to prominence in NXT having fantastic matches with the likes of Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Bayley. She would go on to form the Women's Revolution when Stephanie McMahon called up Charlotte, Sasha, and Becky with the trio alongside Bayley, who was still in NXT at the time, being dubbed the 'Four Horsewomen'.

However it wasn't until her kayfabe relationship with Becky Lynch started to strain, and Charlotte started working onscreen with her real-life father Ric Flair that Charlotte really came into her own as a top villainess in the company.

During this period Charlotte turned on her father, became the first ever Women's champion after the Diva's title was disbanded, and alongside Sasha Banks was the first woman to compete in a Hell In a Cell Match and also to main event a pay per view.

In 2017 Charlotte was drafted to SmackDown LIVE during the superstar shake-up, ending her heel run and turning her face. Since then Charlotte has mainly feuded with Natalya and is set to wrestle her for the SmackDown Women's Title at Hell In a Cell

The heart of the matter

During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Queen was asked about her current on-screen character as a face. Here's what she had to say.

“I do miss the evil queen, but I think that my on-camera relationship with Becky is allowing the audience to see a softer side of the queen. For two years I was so intense and stern and always in the title picture. I think now the audience gets to take a breath of fresh air with me, so when I do turn into the evil queen again, they are ready for it. It’s a nice break right now for my character and for the audience.”

Charlotte also addressed her real-life friendship with the rest of the 'Four Horsewomen' and what it's like to be able to travel with them, as well as work with them.

“I think part of our success is because we don’t necessarily do this to be stars. We work together as superstars to change the game for women, so we never lose touch with why we are doing this. But I am traveling the world with my best friend in a car 90% of the time. Getting lost, getting in car accidents, eating at random places in the middle of the night. So, it is that great."

What's next?

Interestingly Charlotte seemed to let slip here that it's not a matter of if she turns heel again, but rather a case of when she turns heel again as she describes her current face run as a 'break' for her character. This means that we can look forward to more heel Charlotte in the future, and depending on what happens at HIAC it might be sooner than we think!

Author's take

I will admit that I've been less of a fan of Charlotte's SmackDown face run than her Raw heel run so the prospect of her going back to being the evil Queen is one that gets me excited. I truly think she's at her best when she's being a villainess.
