WWE News: Chris Jericho comments on why Vince McMahon decided to drop the roman numbers from the WrestleMania title
What’s the story?
On the recent edition of the Talk is Jericho podcast, WWE veteran Chris Jericho discussed and shared some insight on why WWE Chairman Vince McMahon decided to drop the term WrestleMania.
In case you didn’t know…
As noted, former nine-time WWE Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho missed out on this year’s WrestleMania 34 event due to him being on tour with his rock band Fozzy.
Jericho, who last competed at WWE’s flagship event back in 2017, has been making sporadic appearances for the company ever since his storyline with Kevin Owens came to a conclusion on July of 2017.
Meanwhile, Jericho has also been heavily featured on New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he competed earlier this year at Wrestle Kingdom 12 at the Tokyo Dome in a five star battle against “The Best Bout Machine” Kenny Omega.
“The Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla” also made a cameo appearance at Raw’s 25th Anniversary show back in January of 2018.
The heart of the matter
During the recent episode of Talk is Jericho podcast, Chris Jericho noted that the apparent reason why WWE Chairman Vince McMahon decided to drop the numbers from the WrestleMania title is due to Vince McMahon believing in the fact that the numbers seemingly ages the event.
Likewise, McMahon also claimed that the WrestleMania event shouldn’t be called "The Granddaddy Of Them All" because obviously it does makes the show seem a bit too old. (H/T: WrestlingInc)
"The reason why, and everybody at home is that Vince does not like the numbers after the WrestleMania because he feels like it dates it. Also, you're not allowed to call it 'The Grandaddy Of Them All' because he feels that it makes it seem old. So yeah, Super Bowl 75, he does not like the number, so you cannot refer to it as 'WrestleMania 34'. You just refer to it as 'WrestleMania'. One of those classic Vince McMahon quirks."
What’s next?
As per reported by us recently, Chris Jericho is now set to make his return to the WWE later this month as part of the Greatest Royal Rumble event in Saudi Arabia.
Author’s take
If you’ve been a WWE fan for the past few decades then I can certainly assure you that the roman numbers affiliated with the WrestleMania term were somewhat iconic in the mind of every fan and in my opinion, the numbers associated with the WrestleMania title was indeed very significant.
