WWE News: Chris Jericho on wrestling more matches for NJPW
What’s the story?
In an interview with Proresu Today, Chirs Jericho spoke extensively regarding his upcoming match against Kenny Omega.
Expounding on whether he could potentially wrestle more matches for NJPW, Jericho asserted that it is indeed a possibility. Besides, Y2J also opined why his match against Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 will be bigger than that of Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito at the same event.
In case you didn’t know…
The recent announcement of WCW and WWE legend Chris Jericho going to NJPW for a dream match against one of the Japanese promotion’s biggest stars Kenny Omega sent shockwaves throughout the professional wrestling community.
Jericho’s contract with the WWE had recently run its course, following which he informed WWE boss Vince McMahon about his plans of facing Omega under the NJPW banner—something that McMahon gave Y2J his blessings for.
The heart of the matter
Chris Jericho reiterated that he isn’t under contract with the WWE or anyone, hence he’s free to do whatever he wants, and it has nothing to do with the WWE. He added that much like the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather ‘Money Fight’ which no one believed would ever happen, his fight with Kenny Omega is also something that battled long odds so as to come to fruition.
Furthermore, Jericho elucidated that Kenny Omega is the best he’s ever seen, but Y2J is better than the best. He continued that if one removes WWE from the discussion, NJPW is the biggest pro-wrestling organization, with great performers and a brand that is known worldwide and wanted to be viewed by everyone.
Additionally, Jericho explained that Okada vs. Naito is a huge matchup, however, even in Japan, the vast majority of fans are more excited about ‘Alpha vs. Omega’ aka ‘Jericho vs. Omega’. Y2J added—
“(Our match) might never happen again. That gives it a different level of importance…I've said maybe me and Kenny will never happen again, but I never said I'd only do one match. I never said this would be my last match with New Japan. Wait and see."
What’s next?
Chris Jericho competes against IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega with the title on the line in the co-main event of NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 12, which goes down at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on January 4th.
The show will be headlined by an IWGP Heavyweight Championship matchup between reigning champ Kazuchika Okada and Tetsuya Naito.
Author’s take
Chris Jericho is a professional wrestling genius, and his great understanding of the business has been proven once again with the ongoing feud against Kenny Omega.
‘The Cleaner’ is one of the best pro-wrestlers in the world today, and after facing the former, perhaps Jericho could move on to other feuds in NJPW. After all, Y2J doesn’t seem to be ruling out anything at this stage.
