WWE News: Chris Jericho says non-WWE work will make him a bigger star in WWE
What’s the story?
Chris Jericho appeared on Busted Open Radio this past Saturday and said that his upcoming match with Kenny Omega and other work outside WWE will help to boost his star power.
In case you didn’t know
Jericho announced at NJPW Power Struggle that he will challenge Kenny Omega at the Wrestle Kingdom 12 for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship; marking more than 20 years since he last wrestled for NJPW.
Prior to his Wrestle Kingdom announcement, the former WWE United States Champion announced plans for the Chris Jericho Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea which will be a cruise next year in October that will feature live music performances, legend appearances and matches with ROH superstars.
The heart of the matter
Jericho said that he likes doing things that have never been done before, like his upcoming match with Omega, and that his relationship with Vince McMahon allows him to work a unique schedule and not be restricted by the WWE. Transcriptions from Wrestling INC.
“I think I'm in a very unique position in the WWE where I have a great relationship with the company, one guy [specifically], where normal rules might not apply.“
Jericho went on to say that all of his non-WWE work only adds to his star power when he eventually returns to the company.
“If I want to go to New Japan to work a main event at the Tokyo Dome or put on my own cruise and work in tandem with Ring Of Honor, that's OK, because guess what? At the end of the day, when I go back to the WWE it makes me that much bigger of a star."
What’s Next?
Jericho and Omega will meet in the ring next year on January 4, 2018, to fight for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
After Jericho competes at Wrestle Kingdom, he is expected to eventually return to the WWE which could put him in position to return at the Royal Rumble, but that is pure speculation at this point.
