WarGames is finally returning to the pro wrestling world

What's the story?

WWE is finally bringing back the WarGames match, the double ring steel cage bout created by Dusty Rhodes in the NWA. Dusty's son Cody has taken to Twitter to comment on the decision, doing so in a calm and respectful manner.

In case you didn't know...

WarGames was created by Dusty Rhodes and used initially in the NWA, for matches involving the Four Horsemen. The matches usually involved two teams of four or five, who battled in two rings that were enclosed inside a steel cage with a roof.

Combatants would enter every five minutes until all were involved, at which point 'The Match Beyond' would begin. The match could only end via submission or surrender, although pinfalls were brought in for the final match in 1998.

The first WarGames took place in the NWA in 1987, and the match became a staple of WCW's Fall Brawl pay-per-view. After 19 years dormant, WWE is bringing the match back, for the upcoming NXT TakeOver in Houston.

The heart of the matter

As news of the return of WarGames spread, current ROH World Champion Cody took to Twitter to comment on the return of his father's creation. Cody was recently critical of WWE's decision to bring back Starrcade, but his response here was far more measured.

Cody confirmed that he isn't mad and that he was aware of the decision beforehand. The Grandson of a Plumber also said that he expects the match to be treated with care and effort. The tweet can be seen below.

Pro wrestling fans have been clamouring for WarGames to return for many years - their wish has finally been granted.

What's next?

WarGames will return at NXT TakeOver: WarGames and three teams will do battle inside the eponymous structure. SAnitY and The Undisputed Era will make up two of the teams, with the trio of Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong completing the lineup. The show takes places on November 18 in Houston, the night before WWE Survivor Series.

Author's take

Whilst it is somewhat exciting that WarGames is coming back, that excitement comes from a place of nostalgia alone. WarGames was more often than not an overbooked mess, and the final match in 1998 was one of the worst in WCW history.

Granted, Roderick Strong, Kyle O'Reilly, Killian Dain and the rest are far better workers than Stevie Ray, Warrior and Lex Luger, but the same fear remains. This could either be a truly great match, or one to forget.
