WWE News: Cody Rhodes reveals the original idea for "Battleground", talks facing Shield, Dusty's struggle
In October 2013, Cody Rhodes and Goldust took on The Shield in a match at WWE Battleground, with two stipulations. The first one was, that if they lost, they would no longer have their jobs; and the second was that Dusty Rhodes’ would lose his role as an NXT Trainer. In a critically acclaimed match, The Rhodes Brothers prevailed.
During an Inside The Ropes Manchester show, Cody revealed what the original plans for Battleground were supposed to be:
“It was supposed to be War Games, that’s why it was called Battleground. It was me, and these other fired guys vs The Shield, and it was going to be something different. Dustin [Goldust] went out there and had that good match and it ended up being that special Rhodes vs Shields moment”
Cody spoke about how reluctant his father, the late, great Dusty Rhodes was, regarding the entire match and situation. He apparently struggled to get inside the ring. Cody said that his father hated coming back as an old man. Cody assured him that he was Dusty Rhodes and people would always love him, and he didn’t need to do a thing.
Dusty responded by saying that he could take out his belt and whip it at Dean Ambrose. However, due to the fact that he had lost weight and his jeans were too big, Jamie Noble told Cody to tell him not to do that spot. Here is what Cody said:
Cody went on to say that he did do the spot anyway, and if you go and watch back the spot, he took a really long time to take off the belt. He praised Dean Ambrose for being flawless with how he dealt with that spot, and when Dusty hit the bionic elbow, the entire crowd stood to their feet, which Cody said was an extremely proud moment for Dusty as a performer.
Cody even said that Dusty and Vince embraced after the match. Furthermore, Vince said it was one of the best matches he had ever seen.
Here is the finish of the match
