WWE News: Commentators were told to call the Goldberg vs Lesnar like a 'fight'

Lesnar vs. Goldberg at the Smackdown Live

The Survivor Series PPV that happened on November 20th shocked WWE fans and members of the wrestling world all over. What was to be a full blown match between two wrestling giants Brock Lesnar and Goldberg, ended in almost the blink of an eye, or 86 seconds to be exact.

However, the newest update to come from that match is that the commentators were instructed to call the match like a fight, as reported by Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer.

Here’s what Meltzer said,

"The pitch was to present this as a fight. The announcers were told, unlike anything else on the show, to call it like a fight. The feeling is the audience was mature enough and had seen enough UFC to know that a fight can be short and explosive, and that's not ripping off the public or making them dissatisfied.”

Another angle that came up was the general audience perception when it came to matters of main events being held. To this, Meltzer said,

“Plus, And while I don’t even know that this came up in this specific case, it is good for educational purposes of the audience for them to believe a main event can end at any time, as opposed to knowing that everyone gets in their repertoire of moves, secondary non-finishes, and not until that is over with, is the match actually going to end.”

However, this match proved most of the audiences wrong, with its whacky sense of timing.

“The big PPV shows of late have been ending after 11 p.m., and thus, as Goldberg and Lesnar went to the ring with about 30 minutes left, people were conditioned, knowing how long the show goes, that it would be a normal length main event. Instead, the show ended ‘way early’.”

After falling to Goldberg about 12 years ago at Wrestlemania XX, Brock Lesnar suffered the same blow again at the Survivor Series match, where he was once again defeated by the former WCW World Heavyweight champion, and that too in about less than two minutes.

Here is the video the match for all those who missed it.
