WWE Rumours: WWE looking to hire another Olympic gold medalist

Erica Weibe at the 2016 Rio Olympics

WWE is always looking for new talent, and the 2016 Rio Olympics was one of the best places they could scout for some. The Olympics brought the best athletes from around the world in one city and WWE scouts found one wrestler who they are really interested in. Erica Wiebe, the athlete in question, is the reigning champion in the Women’s 75 kg freestyle category in the Summer Olympics as well as the current Commonwealth Games champion for the 75kg weight class.

The 27-year-old Canadian had her first bout in the ring at grade 9. She went on to the University of Calgary where she won a bronze at the 2013 World University Games in women’s 72 kg freestyle weight class.

Wiebe travelled as a part of the extended team for Canada during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and served as the training partner for Leah Callahan. She went from strength to strength and won gold in her weight class at the 2015 World University Games and yet another gold medal at the 2015 Golden Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin.

Erica Wiebe most recently made the news when she represented Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and managed to secure the third ever gold medal for her country after defeating Guzel Manyurova in the final event of their women’s wrestling weight class.

WWE is reportedly pursuing her to sign a contract as a full-time pro wrestler. Apparently, she is a fan of pro wrestling too as is evident from an Instagram post she made while visiting The Hart Dungeon in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. In the picture, she can be seen pointing to a white board with Stu and Owen Hart’s names on it and flaunting one of the many medals she has won over the years.

This wouldn’t be the first time WWE has had former Olympic athletes on their roster. Kurt Angle is probably the most famous example of an Olympic gold medalist to work for WWE after his 1996 victory representing the United States. Mark Henry has also been an Olympic participant in 1992 and 1996 in Weightlifting, who joined WWE a couple of months after he suffered an injury during the 1996 Olympics causing him to forfeit. He would go on to be the World Heavyweight Champion in WWE and is now on the cusp of hanging up his boots.
