What's the story?

As expected, Enzo Amore outlasted Cedric Alexander, Gran Metalik, The Brian Kendrick and Tony Nese to become the new number one contender for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Enzo will now take on Neville at No Mercy with the championship on the line.

In case you didn't know...

It has been a tumultuous few months for Enzo Amore. The Michael Jordan of Jargon has reportedly swum into hot water backstage, annoying anyone and everyone in the locker room and gaining himself huge amounts of heat in the process.

Enzo has been 'demoted' to 205 Live as a result and made his debut in the cruiserweight division following SummerSlam. This has seemingly been a positive for everyone involved, as Enzo's presence has added some much-needed interest in the flagging division.

On this week's 205 Live, a Fatal 5-Way match was booked to decide a new number one contender for Neville's WWE Cruiserweight Championship.

The heart of the matter

Enzo Amore was expected to win the Fatal 5-Way, and Enzo Amore indeed came out on top when all four eliminations had taken place. Enzo now goes on to face Neville at No Mercy in 18 days, but the bigger story here may well be the performance of Cedric Alexander.

Amore got his hand raised at the end of the match, but Cedric was far and away the star of the match. It was Alexander who eliminated the other three competitors, hitting Tony Nese, Gran Metalik and The Brian Kendrick with his devastating Lumbar Check finishing move.

Enzo was only able to win through a mixture of luck and timing, and Alexander's performance really pushed him to the front of the cruiserweight queue. Queen City's Favourite Son has long felt like a natural challenger for Neville, but this is the first time he has been booked as so.

What's next?

It was Amore that got the final win, however, and the Al Capone of the Microphone will now move on to challenge the King of the Cruiserweights at No Mercy. The RAW-exclusive pay-per-view takes place on September 24 in Los Angeles and will be headlined by Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman's battle over the WWE Universal Championship.

Author's take

Neville vs. Enzo for the title was always going to happen, but the plaudits coming out of this match really should be thrown in Cedric's direction. This was a fantastic performance from one of WWE's most underutilised talents, and it simply must lead to bigger and better things.
