What's the story?

Dean Ambrose is leaving WWE after WrestleMania 35. This is not a rumour, but something that has been confirmed by WWE in their own announcement -- something that has never been done before.

However, on the way out, it looks like WWE is changing up how they are booking Dean Ambrose -- yet again. This week's episode of WWE RAW saw a slight change to the gimmick that Ambrose has been portraying in front of the WWE Universe.

In case you didn't know...

Dean Ambrose was rumoured to be leaving WWE recently -- a rumour that was confirmed by WWE. Ambrose will leave WWE after WrestleMania 35 -- at least that's what WWE is saying. Whether that ultimately happens or not is up for debate.

Dean Ambrose turned heel for the first time since his early Shield days when he attacked Seth Rollins following their win for the RAW Tag Team Titles. The attack came after Roman Reigns announced that he was leaving WWE to deal with his Leukaemia.

However, there was no proper follow up to the feud between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, with Ambrose adopting a germaphobe gimmick.

Thankfully, now, it appears Dean Ambrose's last run in WWE is going to be as the Lunatic Fringe the WWE Universe knows and loves.

The heart of the matter

Dean Ambrose's role on WWE RAW has been confusing, to say the least. On this week's episode, he slapped Drew McIntyre hard backstage, challenging him to a match.

When he came out to face McIntyre, it was to his old theme music. No more the siren which was the bane of Ambrose's existence for the past few months, but he looked and acted more and more like the old Dean Ambrose fans know and love.

Although he lost to McIntyre, he went backstage and in a segment, continued to act as the 'Lunatic Fringe'.

He confronted Seth Rollins and asked him why he had not been at ringside for his match -- almost as if he had forgotten that the two of them had been in a feud for the better part of the last few months.

Rollins was as startled as the rest of the fans, but this Dean Ambrose seems to be the old Lunatic Fringe.

What's next?

While nothing is sure, it appears Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins may reconcile in the days to come.
