Dolph Ziggler left the United States Championship in the ring and walked out seven weeks ago

What's the story?

Well, I don't think anyone would have predicted seven weeks ago that WWE Superstar Dolph Ziggler would win the United States Championship at Clash Of Champions and then simply leave the US Championship in the ring and walk away.

There were reports that "The Show Off" may be ready to walk away from wrestling completely but, after a short appearance at the Royal Rumble, Ziggler is set to return to action next week on SmackDown Live.

In case you didn't know...

Ziggler's latest run seemed very close to home for the former Money In The Bank winner, with his last promo on television being that the fans don't deserve him.

It's no secret that The Show Off has been unhappy with his position in WWE, but after a spell of his character seeming stagnant, his most recent run actually seemed to brighten things up again - with the title win seemingly setting his career back on track.

The heart of the matter

Well, WWE has confirmed that Dolph Ziggler will return to action next week to face Baron Corbin. The two have a storied history and Corbin was the defending champion when Ziggler won the US Title - a belt now held by Bobby Roode.

These two have competed for many, many times over the past couple of years. It'll be interesting to see how Ziggler returns - if he'll continue his "no gimmicks" gimmick or go back to "The Show Off" we all know and love!

What's next?

Well, after winning a match in late 2016 that would have seen him leave the company if there was any other outcome, the rumours on Ziggler leaving cooled a bit - but they gathered steam again when he left the United States Championship in the ring.

I guess we'll know more about The Show Off's intentions next week.

Author's take

Ziggler is one of the best technical wrestlers at WWE's disposal right now, almost anyone will admit that. The big problem was always his character becoming stale and being a face who is called The Show Off. It just doesn't work.

Ziggler always worked best as a heel, he even has it in his Twitter handle, and his most recent run was probably one of his best. I'd love to see him come back and be the same heel we saw seven weeks ago - but I guess only time will tell.
