What's the story?

NXT Champion Drew McIntyre waged a battle against Andrade 'Cien' Almas and dropped the NXT Championship during the said encounter.

McIntyre himself confirmed the news, through his official social media account:

In case you didn't know...

As we informed you recently, Wrestling Observer Newsletter speculated that Drew McIntyre was on the verge of being called up when he suffered his injury. The plan was for Aleister Black, Adam Cole and Killian Dain to take over as the top guys of the NXT brand.

Unfortunately, the injury made all plans go awry.

The heart of the matter

As disheartening as it must be for McIntyre at this juncture, it is clear that he is not going to be demoralized because of it. He alluded to coming back stronger from every setback that he's suffered in the past and also issued a warning to whoever was NXT Champion, to be ready for him.

All said and done, McIntyre is faring much better in his current run than he did when he was in 3MB. He's a far better worker, looks like a bigger star and has also developed his skills on the microphone, to perfection.

What's next?

Now begins a period of rest and repair for the former NXT Champion, Drew McIntyre. We're certain he'll be in the mix, whenever he does return from injury. We're also certain that he will be called up, very soon after.

Author's take

The sky is the limit for Drew McIntyre. He's got the look and the all the characteristics of a legitimate WWE superstar. He may even be the next face of the company if everything goes right for him.
