WWE News: Eric Bischoff shoots down rumors of The Undertaker ever having talks with WCW
What's the story?
Former President of WCW Eric Bischoff recently dispelled rumours of The Undertaker having talks with the defunct promotion in the late 90s.
In an interview with Pop Culture, the former WWE RAW General Manager said that he or other WCW officials never had a conversation with The Undertaker about switching to WCW.
In case you didn't know...
Bischoff, who was the WCW President during the Monday Night Wars in the 90s, signed some of the biggest names in pro wrestling, including the likes of Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and more.
Before debuting with the WWE in 1990, The Undertaker wrestled in WCW and went by the name "Mean Mark" Callous, in 1989. After signing with the WWE (which was known as WWF back then) he went on to become one of the most prized possessions of Vince McMahon's promotion.
In the 90s, there were constant rumours about The Deadman joining the ever-growing list of Superstars who jumped ship from WWE to WCW, but it never did happen.
The heart of the matter
The rumour that went around in the late 90s is that The Undertaker had an offer in hand from WCW and went knocking on the door of WWE CEO, Vince McMahon, and demanded a new character or he would leave to WCW. And many people believe that this 'demand' led to the Biker Taker gimmick.
But, then Bischoff dismisses this myth and said: "See, that's another one of those internet wrestling rumours that continues to survive, what is it now, 18, 19 years later? Nothing could be further from the truth."
He went on to reiterate that this 'rumour' could have merely been speculation from employees that didn't matter. "There was never one syllable of conversation between anybody that mattered. Maybe some of the lower level guys on the production, maybe some freelancers said, 'Wow, wouldn't it be cool if the Undertaker came over?'"
"Or maybe there was some new assignees over at the Power Plant where some other people that really weren't very significant who had some indirect association with the company that speculated about how cool it would be. There was never any meaningful conversation with anybody that mattered at any level."
What's next?
We aren't quite sure if The Undertaker is retired or not after his bemusing promo at RAW 25 at the Manhattan Center.
Author's take
I am quite glad that The Undertaker never switched to WCW and has an achievement to his name that will possibly never be broken in the history of pro wrestling - The Streak.
