WWE News: Former Wyatt Family member unveils new possible gimmick

Rowan had returned with a new mask, he has now unveiled another one

What’s the story?

WWE Superstar Erick Rowan, who made his return to action on the post-WrestleMania 33 episode of SmackDown LIVE, recently gave an unsettling interview on Talking Smack.

Rowan showed Renee Young and Shane McMahon a new mask of his and said that it made him smile. A clip of the segment can be seen below:

In case you didn’t know...

Erick Rowan is currently signed on to the SmackDown LIVE brand. During a match in October 2016, Rowan’s shoulder was injured, and he had to undergo surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, which ruled him out of action for six months.

Rowan returned by aligning himself with Bray Wyatt on the post-WrestleMania 33 edition of SmackDown LIVE. Wyatt has since moved to WWE’s RAW brand, and Rowan has entered into a feud with Luke Harper instead.

The heart of the matter

Erick Rowan made an appearance on the post-SmackDown LIVE show Talking Smack where he spoke with Renee Young and Shane McMahon. Rowan took out his sheep mask, which was re-coloured to give it a clown-like appearance and stated that it was something he made and that it made him happy.

Rowan then put on the sheep mask and handed Young a balloon, which he popped right afterwards, spooking her out. Rowan proceeded to laugh at Renee. He then spoke about his opponent, Luke Harper, who he would be facing at Backlash, and promised to defeat him.

What’s next?

Rowan has been trying out a clown gimmick at Live Events off late, and the mask might just be a part of a gimmick change/tweak that could be coming up for the big man. He is scheduled to go up against his former fellow Wyatt Family brother, Luke Harper, on the May 21st Backlash Pay Per View in a singles match.

It is rumoured that WWE has no solid plans for either Harper or Rowan right now, the situation will become clearer post-Backlash.

Author’s take

Weirdness and Erick Rowan go hand in hand. The man, who is notorious for posting cryptic Tweets might just be adding another feather to his cap with this appearance, or he may just be in line for a gimmick tweak.

The 6-foot-8 Rowan can be a formidable singles competitor, but he certainly needs a little more depth to him instead of just being known as a Wyatt, Family henchman. His Talking Smack appearance seems like a step in the right direction, and it will be interesting to see what the WWE do with him next!
