WWE News: Goldberg on Lesnar squash match, upcoming Royal Rumble appearance
Bill Goldberg spoke to Brian Campbell of ESPN following Survivor Series. Regarding his squash match with Brock Lesnar, he said:
"I think at this time in my career, the best way to take [Lesnar] down was shock and awe, to do something that nobody would expect against a monster like that. At the end of the day, you have smart marks all over the world thinking that they know the outcome of a match. I don't believe any of them thought that was going to be it."
He proceeded to say that to be booked to win against a guy like Brock Lesnar was a dream come true. He also said that he believes that he and Lesnar, bring something completely different to the table unlike any two people in the sport of professional wrestling.
Regarding his Royal Rumble appearance next year, he said:
"I'm only as good as my next appearance and my next match. I'm concentrating on the Royal Rumble and that's it. I don't have any plans of doing anything afterwards. My focus is on the 29 other men that I'm going to have to crucify to win that damn match."
Although he said that he isn’t booked to do anything afterwards, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated that Goldberg is also going to be performing at Wrestlemania 33 next year.
It was reported by Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet on Tuesday that Brock Lesnar is pencilled in to be part of the Royal Rumble match as well, which will ensure that Goldberg and The Beast Incarnate will cross paths once again.
This scenario will likely lead to Lesnar costing Goldberg the Royal Rumble match, something similar to what happened in 2004, which also led to a Wrestlemania match between the two.
It would definitely be interesting to see how it is booked this time around, as WWE would likely attempt to avoid repetition in order to avoid garnering criticism for rehashing a storyline that was already used 12 (by then it will be 13) years ago. That is why WWE would love to catch fans from behind with a twist, similar to what happened in Survivor Series.
For Survivor Series, many fans believed that Lesnar would end up victorious and that it would be a one-and-done for Goldberg, but that was not the case. Before coming out, Goldberg had signed a deal extending till the Royal Rumble. The entire reason Goldberg was made to squash Lesnar so quickly was to get him more over like he did back in WCW.
The squash and Goldberg’s deal with WWE were pushed for Brock Lesnar himself, as he saw money in Goldberg returning.
With regards to WWE extending his return, Goldberg said that it is dependent on whether one is a smart businessman upon a return to their product. He said that he believes everyone must wait and see if the investment pays off, and each time he was given the ball to carry; he hoped that WWE would have confidence in him and further include him in their plans.
