WWE News: Goldust teases the return of Cody Rhodes for Starrcade
What's the story?
Earlier this week the WWE announced that Starrcade would make its return after 17 years for a Smackdown Live event on Saturday, November 25th. Since it is just after Survivor Series, it is unknown if it will be a pay-per-view, a WWE Network special, or even if it will air on a broadcast.
This prompted a message from Cody Rhodes to Michael Hayes via Twitter, and Hayes would respond right away:
Cody's brother Goldust would take it a step further and create a promotional poster to get the fans talking:
In case you didn't know...
Starrcade was WrestleMania before the flagship WWE pay per view existed. This pay-per-view event would start in 1983 and continue until 2000 for the NWA, Jim Crockett Promotions, and WCW.
Just like WrestleMania, Starrcade started out on closed-circuit television before transitioning to pay per view eventually. The main event of the very first Starrcade in 1983 was a classic match between Ric Flair and Harley Race inside a steel cage for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
The heart of the matter
Starrcade was the idea of Cody Rhodes' father, the legendary Dusty Rhodes. With Cody being the current Ring Of Honor World Champion, he realises that the chances of him being on the show are very slim so he took to Twitter to at least get his brother featured on the card.
Goldust took it up a notch with his photoshopped promo showing the Hardy Boyz vs. The Rhodes Family, a Twitter post that drove the internet crazy as it had over 6,000 likes.
It is unknown what Cody's current contract situation is with Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. The likelihood of Cody returning to the WWE this year is slim, but not impossible.
What's next?
Next up for Cody is the 15th edition of Ring of Honor's pay-per-view Death Before Dishonor this Friday. He'll defend his ROH World Championship against Minoru Suzuki in his first match in the United States in over 25 years.
Author's take
It would be amazing to see Cody as The American Nightmare in the WWE and get a main event push that he deserves. I am not holding my breath on this dream tag match happening though, especially with Cody still the ROH World Champion.
