Ryback opened up on his acrimonious 2016 departure from WWE

What's the story?

In a recent interview on The Domenick Nati Show, former WWE Intercontinental Champion Ryback spoke about his acrimonious departure from the company and whether he has any regrets about how his tenure in WWE came to an end. Ryback also spoke about his post-WWE relationship (or lack of) with Vince McMahon.

In case you didn't know...

When Ryback made his main roster splash in the summer of 2012, he was immediately met with chants of 'Goldberg' as fans initially saw through his monster push. The Big Guy's undeniable charisma began to shine through, however, and all of a sudden WWE had a new star on its hands.

Ryback was then rushed into a few with CM Punk, and everything went wrong from there. An ill-advised heel turn followed after WrestleMania 29, and before long Ryback found himself struggling for traction in the undercard.

The Big Guy was sent home from television in May 2016, before being granted his official release in August of that same year. He has been relatively quiet in the year since.

The heart of the matter

During the interview with Nati, Ryback was asked whether or not he had spoken to Vince McMahon since his departure. The Big Guy confirmed that he has not and has no real desire to do so, choosing instead to stick to his beliefs.

"I had enough respect to know that he created that empire and that system and my only option at that time - they left me no other option, I had to leave. I had to get out of there"

Ryback went on to say that right now he is focused on his Feed Me More nutrition line, before going on to give a little piece of advice to anyone looking to work for WWE.

"It's obviously a great way to earn a living at times, but I think you need to fully understand that when you get into it, the person who created that empire is a billionaire and is a billionaire for a reason. You've got to be okay with being gone and sacrificing your body and whatnot"

What's next?

With the focus on his nutrition line, The Big Guy's appearances in independent pro wrestling promotions have been few and far between. It seems clear that we shouldn't expect to see him back in WWE anytime soon, however.

Author's take

The Ryback situation is a strange one. When he left in summer 2016, many felt that he had the business smarts to make something big of his brand in the wake of his departure. That explosion is yet to materialise, and The Big Guy has become more of a punchline than a major player.

Ryback is an immensely talented human being, however, so don't expect him to stay out of the news for too long.
